A host of information about Xbox’s upcoming South of Midnight has been divulged, including how long it takes to beat, its console frame rate, and more. South of Midnight unveiled its gameplay at Xbox’s June games showcase, which was considered by many to be the gaming brand’s best showcase ever. Compulsion Games‘ gorgeous southern-themed third-person action adventure game shared the stage with Perfect Dark‘s gameplay reveal, more stunning footage from Playground Games’ Fable, and the unveiling of Doom: The Dark Ages and Gears of War: E-Day.
Before Xbox began boldly purchasing entire publishers, it would pick and choose individual studios to add to its first-party development family. Compulsion Games was one of these studios to join Xbox way back in 2018, alongside PlayGround Games, Undead Labs, Ninja Theory, and the creation of The Initiative. With six years having passed since its welcome to the Xbox family, South of Midnight will be the studio’s third game, following Contrast and We Happy Few, but its first title released as part of Xbox Game Studios. From what many can tell from its gameplay reveal earlier this year, the long wait for South of Midnight seems to be more than worth it.

South of Midnight’s Greatest Strength is Clear
With its southern inspiration permeating the whole experience, South of Midnight’s greatest strength isn’t hard to identify.
Compulsion Games has been rolling out a whole lot of important information about South of Midnight recently, as it has released a 30-minute dev diary delving into the making of the title. In visiting Compulsion Games up in Canada, Parris Lilly of Kinda Funny and Gamertag Radio shared what he learned about the game from his time with the studio. On Twitter, Parris mentioned that South of Midnight will take players roughly 12 hours to beat, and that the Unreal Engine 4 title will run at 60 FPS on both Xbox Series X and S. Furthermore, Lilly added that players will be able to turn off South of Midnight‘s stop-motion effect in the settings, but only for gameplay; cutscenes will remain with the effect.
South of Midnight Will Take Around 12 Hours To Beat
Compulsion Games using Unreal Engine 4 instead of 5 shouldn’t be a big deal, considering South of Midnight isn’t shooting for lifelike visuals and instead dons a unique stop-motion art style. There’s a lot of debate surrounding how long certain games should take to beat. Some people prefer games to be longer, while others like a shorter, more focused experience. South of Midnight‘s 12 hours looks to strike a healthy balance for a third-person action adventure title; not too short, yet it shouldn’t overstay its welcome. Despite all this key info, fans are still left wondering when they’ll be able to get their hands on South of Midnight. Rumors are currently suggesting April, but nothing has been officially confirmed.
South of Midnight will release on Xbox Series X/S and PC in 2025, and will be available via Game Pass on day one. In the meantime, there are still several major games due to hit Xbox’s popular subscription service by the end of this year, with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 coming on November 19, STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl launching a day later on the 20th, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle landing on December 9.
