Opening Personality Test:

Very early in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, players will be asked a series of seemingly innocuous questions that seem to probe for certain personality traits. Those players new to Dragon Quest 3 will likely assume that, like most games with similar mechanics, the questions will have no real impact on their playthrough. Longtime fans of the series will know that this is a big mistake.

In fact, the opening quiz is an extremely complex personality test, which assigns your character a personality type based on the answers you have given. There are a massive range of possible personalities in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, and yours will determine how your player develops over the course of the game.

Luckily, there is a way to both temporarily and permanently change personality type, which we will explain in detail below.

Personality and Stats:

While there aren’t many personalities that are flat-out detrimental to your character, there are many that are nowhere near as beneficial as the best personality types, and therefore result in your player developing far slower than they should have.

The best personality types, like Vamp, Genius, Wit, and Lucky Devil, all increase special stats extremely quickly, without slowing the increase of any others. Which personality you go for will depend on your playstyle, as well as whether you’re creating the Hero protagonist, or new party member.

Party Member Personalities:

When you recruit new party members in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, they will be randomly assigned a personality type. You can change their personality type through the methods that will be listed in the next section.

How to Change Personality Type in Dragon Quest 3 Remake

There are several reasons why you may wish to change personality type in Dragon Quest 3 Remake. When you discover your new party members’ personalities don’t match their vocation, you’ll likely want to begin looking for something better.

When you reach the point that you begin utilizing Dragon Quest 3 Remake‘s vocation changing mechanic for your party, you’ll likely want to change their personality type to fit their new class.

Whatever the reason, there are two key methods for changing personality type in Dragon Quest 3 Remake:

  • Accessories – Temporary: The world of DQIII Remake is filled with accessories that allow you to temporarily change personality type.
  • Books – Permanent: For a longer-term solution to the personality problem, the choice will be books and other reading materials found throughout the game world.

How to Find and Use Accessories to Change Personality Type:

Accessories can be acquired through a variety of methods in Dragon Quest 3 Remake. First and foremost, they can be found at merchants throughout the game world. Any time you enter a new town or settlement, check all item dealers, weapon merchants, and anyone else selling gear and equipment. The rarest items will be harder to come by this way, but the rarest items aren’t always what you’ll need.

The next most common method of obtaining the accessories you’ll need is through treasure and stealing. If you are looking for accessories to help switch personality types, consider recruiting a thief. They will not only steal items during enemy encounters, they will also learn the Nose for Treasure ability, which reveals how much treasure can be found in your immediate vicinity.

When you find an accessory that provides a desired personality type, make sure to
equip
it in the
main accessory slot.
The sub-accessory slot will not impart any personality-altering effects on the character.

Accessories are often the best route for changing the protagonist’s personality type, as they can be easily removed if you do not like the results.

How to Find and Use Books to Change Personality Type:

DQ3-Find-Books-Bookshelves

Books are almost exclusively found in the various bookshelves of the game world. There are exceptions to this rule, as they can sometimes be stolen from enemies, or given as rewards. There is even the odd chest or drawer that may contain them. But, more often than not, they will be found on bookshelves.

Any time you enter a room in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, make sure to thoroughly examine it for bookshelves. They will not always be lined up along the rear walls. Make sure to slowly walk along the edge of every wall in the room, looking for the tell-tale interact prompt. Not all books will contain personality changes, but the vast majority of them do.

Make sure you are absolutely certain you wish to change personality types permanently before reading a book. If you can, use a new save slot to back up your file before reading the book. If you have the opportunity to use an accessory to try the personality type temporarily first, take it. New personalities can drastically affect the way your stats increase when leveling up, so make certain you’re absolutely sure before taking the plunge.
