No Man’s Sky’s Extensive PS5 Pro Support Was A “Tough Gig” For Developer
A developer at Hello Games spent months on No Man’s Sky’s PS5 Pro features.
Over the last 24 hours, a new debate has sprung up on the No Man’s Sky subreddit, with hundreds of players arguing whether the game’s ships are, in fact, ugly.
“Unpopular opinion: These ships are ugly as F***”
The conversation began with user CodenameDarlen sharing that they thought four of the game’s ships were ugly. This was clearly a controversial statement, as within the first day, the thread received over 600 comments, with players debating the OP’s comments.
The debate centered around four of No Man’s Sky’s exotic class ships—the Squid, Guppy, Mosquito, and Royal—all of which have distinctly unique looks.
CodenameDarlen’s reason for not liking those ships was, “Ships are made to be horizontally flat, not that much vertically high; I see that the animations are pretty sick, but esthetically speaking, it’s just ugly as hell,” a comment on its own which was pretty inflammatory, receiving 75 downvotes and counting.
While a few players concurred, calling the ships weird, goofy, and awful, the general consensus was that, actually, they look pretty good.
The thread’s top comment arguably best-surmised everybody’s feelings. Responding to the OP’s post, it said, “Maybe, but they’re also uniquely NMS. I think the team has done brilliantly to give the universe and its ships their own character without falling into the usual ship design tropes.” Another player added, “I love how much character they give the NMS Universe!”

Hello Games has shown no sign of slowing down development on the title, with multiple updates dropping this year alone, including the return of Mass Effect’s Normandy ship, so it seems there will be plenty more time for this debate to rage on.
