Marvel Rivals’ Fortnite Crossover Explained

Marvel Rivals' Fortnite Crossover Explained

Marvel Rivals‘ launch date is quickly approaching. Developed by both Marvel Games and NetEase Games, Marvel Rivals is a team-based PVP shooter with comparable gameplay systems and team compositions to Overwatch. To help celebrate and publicize its upcoming release, Marvel Rivals is putting the word out by collaborating with many Marvel fans’ most frequented games.

Announced by Marvel Games on November 11, the Chronoverses Collaboration is a cross-promotional campaign between Marvel Rivals and four other games with heavy ties to the Marvel multiverse. Three of these games include other Marvel Games titles, like Marvel Snap, Marvel Puzzle Quest, and Marvel Future Fight. Alongside crossovers with other first-party Marvel Games, Marvel Rivals‘ fourth collaboration will be with Fortnite.

One major Marvel release is set to dominate the December release schedule, as an existing game is lending a hand with a well-timed event.

Another Marvel Crossover Arrives in Fortnite

Fortnite is no stranger to collaborating with Marvel. Building off the MCU’s Endgame-era success, over 80 Marvel-themed skins, a bevy of Battle Royale sandbox items, and several cosmetics for modes like Fortnite Festival and Rocket Racing have made their way into the game throughout the years. Just last season, Doctor Doom took over the Chapter 5 storyline by adding comic-inspired locations and bosses like Emma Frost and Mysterio to the Battle Royale island.

Fortnite’s Ongoing Partnership with Marvel and Disney

While Fortnite has collaborated with many Marvel movies and comics, this will be its first crossover with a Marvel video game. This has surprised plenty of fans, especially since this announcement comes before Marvel Rivals even releases. Fortnite is also the only game featured in this Chronoverses Collaboration that isn’t owned by Disney. However, after Disney acquired a $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games earlier this year, the two companies have become increasingly chummy.

Alongside the most recent Marvel season in Chapter 5, Fortnite added Mr. Incredible, Mrs. Incredible, and Frozone as skins in the game. Fortnitemares — Fortnite‘s annual Halloween event — brought additional characters like Captain Hook, Cruella de Vil, Maleficent, Jack the Pumpkin King, and Sally into the fray. It is even rumored that Epic Games will soon be adding vehicle customization options that allow players to change their cars to look like Lightning McQueen in the Rocket Racing mode.

What to Expect from the Marvel Rivals Collaboration

Besides Marvel Games’ initial announcement of the Chronoverses Collaboration, no other official details have been released. It is unknown if it will be a two-way collaboration where both games will receive themed cosmetics from one another. The most likely option is that Fortnite will be getting new skins based on the characters in Marvel Rivals.

Marvel Rivals has drawn attention for its unique, highly detailed character designs, which could lend well to cosmetics in Fortnite. Marvel Rivals‘ roster includes characters like Namor, Magik, Peni Parker, the Punisher, Adam Warlock, and the Winter Soldier, who all have yet to appear in Fortnite. Many fans are also hoping that this could make way for Galacta — daughter of Galactus and the in-game announcer for Marvel Rivals — to receive a Fortnite skin. Fortnite heavily featured Galactus in its first Marvel season way back in Chapter 2, yet the character never received a skin in the game. This would give Epic Games the perfect opportunity to not only promote Marvel Rivals but also make up for the confusing absence of Galactus-themed cosmetics.

The dates for the Chronoverses Collaboration are currently up in the air. However, details on the crossover shouldn’t be too far out, as Marvel Rivals releases on December 6. Available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5, the game and all of its characters — including the recently announced Moon Knight — will be free at launch.
