There’s only one group who can rescue The Viper.
The purple torch puzzle requires you to collect scattered bones and bring them back to a designated spot. Completing this puzzle grants you a Wisp, which is essential for unlocking a secret door with chests inside; the door cannot be accessed unless you place the Wisp on its lock. This guide explains how to find all purple torches and solve the puzzle.
Purple Torch Location
The purple torch puzzle is located in the Path of Sighs area within Necropolis. To access this puzzle, you will first need to recruit Emmrich as a companion. Once that is done, and fast travel to the Necropolis is unlocked, head to the Crossroads Eluvian of this region and walk straight ahead.
You will soon arrive at a central hub area with multiple doors along the sides and NPCs and a merchant at the center. From the entrance direction, take the door on the left. Continue straight, and you will come to a grand staircase descending into a room with a large statue at its center. Head down the stairs and enter the next room beyond the statue, where you will find an open coffin with two purple torches near it.
How To Solve The Purple Torch Puzzle
To solve the purple torch puzzle, you will need to gather scattered bones and return them to the open coffin flanked by two purple torches. Upon interacting with the coffin, you will discover that a mischievous Wisp is scattering the bones, and the Mourn Watchers would appreciate your help in gathering them all.
Once the Wisp exits the coffin, you will have one minute and 45 seconds to collect the bones and return them to the coffin. All the bones can be found in the room to the east of the coffin. Look for purple torches—each bone is located directly beneath one.
The first purple torch is located directly behind the coffin, and it is easy to spot as the Wisp will guide you to it.
To find the second purple torch, return to the previous room before the coffin area and look to the left. Behind some metal bars, you will see a few wooden boxes with a purple torch behind them. Break the boxes, approach the torch, and collect the second set of bones.
For the third purple torch, head up the stairs in this room and turn right. You will reach a platform you can jump onto, leading to a small room. Inside, you will find the third purple torch, with the bones lying on a table.
The fourth purple torch is located to the left of the stairs. Jump down from the small room, look straight ahead, and you will see the torch in a corner of the hallway with the fourth set of bones beneath it.
To find the fifth purple torch, continue further down the hallway from the fourth torch. You will see several pots blocking the way — break them to reveal the torch with the fifth set of bones underneath. This spot is directly above where you found the second purple torch.
After gathering the fifth set of bones, do not exit the area through the door to the left, as it leads out of the room containing the purple torches. If you leave, all collected bones will vanish, and the puzzle will reset.
After collecting all five bones, return to the coffin where you first encountered the Wisp. Place the bones back in the coffin, and the Wisp will now be yours to take.
With the Wisp following you, head back to the room with the four purple torches. To your right, you will see a locked door through which you can spot chests and other treasures. Outside this door, you will find a lock mechanism — bring the Wisp here to interact with the lock, which will open the door for you.
Rewards
Here are the rewards you will receive for completing the purple torch puzzle and unlocking the door:
