How to Change Party Members in Dragon Quest 3 Remake

Like most turn-based JRPGs, building your party in Dragon Quest 3 Remake will be one of the most important aspects of the game. Whether you want to make minor changes, or rebuild your group from the ground up, knowing how to recruit and change party members will be vital to your success. While DQIII Remake provides some insight into the basics of party-building, it does not thoroughly explain the system. This guide will show players where to recruit new party members in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, and how to change them in and out.

How to Recruit New Party Members in Dragon Quest 3 Remake

DQ3-Pattys-Go-Upstairs

Not long after starting your journey in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, the game will prompt you to hire your first group of party members. And while it walks players through this process, it does do a good job of explaining how to replace those members with new recruits of your choosing. Here, we will go over the process of doing just that.

Patty’s Party Planning Place:

DQIII Remake will send you to Patty’s Party Planning Place in the starting city of Aliahan to hire your first team, and this is the same location you’ll visit to recruit new team members. Currently, there is no other known location where this is possible.

DQ3-Recruit-Yes-PALS

While you dealt with Patty at the front desk to hire your first team, to hire new recruits, you’ll have to head upstairs. There, you’ll find a desk dedicated solely to the hiring of new party members. This is Premiere Adventure Listing Services, or, PALS.

DQ3-New-Recruit-Name

When you first arrive at PALS, you will be asked if you want to add a new member to your roster. Answer Yes, and you will be taken to the first step of the recruiting process, which is naming your new team member. You can pick any name, it will not have an effect on your character.

DQ3-Vocation-Appearance

Next, you’ll be asked to pick a Vocation. These are your options:

  • Warrior
  • Martial Artist
  • Mage
  • Priest
  • Merchant
  • Gadabout
  • Thief
  • Monster Wrangler

This is an important choice, as it determines the playstyle of the character you are creating. Warrior and Martial Artist are more combat oriented, Mage and Priest are magic users, and the rest have their own unique benefits. Once you have settled on a vocation, you’ll move on to choosing gender.

Here, you will be given two options: Appearance A will be treated as a male, while Appearance B will be treated as a female.

It is important to note that
gender
can have an effect on your character. Some personality types are only open to one gender, and different genders can have considerably different stats.

DQ3-Custom-Recruit-Look

After you pick Appearance A or B, you will pick from four possible outfits and character looks. This choice is purely cosmetic, and only affects the character’s appearance. After the look, you will choose the color of your team member’s hair. There are 14 different colors to pick from.

DQ3-New-Recruit-Seeds

Be careful when picking the next option,
Seed Allowance.
You will have to decide if you want to game to pick how to distribute up to
5 seeds,
or if you want to do it yourself. Once you pick, you cannot go back, even if you haven’t used any seeds yet.

You’ll have to decide where to spend your Seed Allowance next. There are six different types of seeds to choose from:

  • Seed of Strength
  • Seed of Defence
  • Seed of Agility
  • Seed of Stamina
  • Seed of Wisdom
  • Seed of Luck

These are tied to the main character’s stats, which affect everything from overall health and MP, to how your stats improve when you level-up. New players should simply let the game choose, as it knows which stats to improve for each vocation. Once you feel more comfortable in your knowledge of the systems, you can do it yourself.

After applying your seeds, the game will randomly assign your character a personality type. Once assigned, it will explain how that personality type affects that character’s stats. The only way to change personality type is with accessories and books.

Finally, you’ll choose what the character sounds like. Once that is done, you will be asked if you want the new character to come with you. If you have a full party, and you say yes, you’ll have to choose a member to stay behind. If you choose no, they will be added to your list of inactive characters, which can be changed downstairs.
