Best Zerg Starting Build Order In StarCraft 2

StarCraft 2 is an intense RTS game where micromanaging and seconds make the difference. While every race starts out the same, the difference between them leads to very different build orders even right off the bat.




How you start a game of StarCraft 2 will either set you up for success or have you trailing behind an opponent who has the upper hand. The Zerg have a unique build order that requires quick actions at the start of the game; here’s the best starting build order for the first few minutes of any game.

Best Starting Build Order For Zerg In StarCraft 2

The Zerg benefit greatly from aggressive gameplay, with the overall goal of taking over the map with creep and overwhelming your enemy with numbers, no matter how small each unit. The first few minutes of the game will focus on setting the foundations for a good economy while expanding at a manageable rate.


  • Immediately build a drone, with a second one seconds later when you have the minerals.
  • After the second drone, build an Overlord once you have the minerals.
  • You’ll be at command capacity, so save up the minerals for a Spawning Pool, followed by a drone to replace the one lost.
  • Once the Overlord finishes, build another drone then start saving up 300 Minerals and build your second Hatchery in the next closed base location.
  • Build two more drones followed by a Queen once your Spawning pool finishes.
  • Now build on a Vespene Geyser followed by another Drone, then Overlord.
  • Build two sets of Zerglings to act as an additional defense before saturating the Gyser with Drones and building another three Drones to replace those.
  • By now the second Hatchery will be finished, so build a Queen for that location and two drones.
  • Finish out with two Evolution Chambers and upgrade your main base to a liar.


As you get used to the timing, a lot of these steps will begin to line up perfectly. From here, you can get more free with how you want to proceed, as the Liar will give you a lot more options in terms of troops. You can also choose to go heavily into Zerglings and Banelings, just be sure to start on the speed upgrade right away. While this is a general build order to start the game, there are a lot more things that can be built as the Zerg.

The Player With A Liar And Double Evolution Pits

A lot of the buildings you can morph as the Zerg are dependent on if you have a Hatchery, Liar, or Hive. As long as you have one that is alive, you’ll get access to all the buildings it unlocks and those before it. As the Zerg, your main base can be morphed by selecting the structure and choosing the bottom right option once the requirements have been met. The buildings you can morph with each main base are:
