The Rise of the Golden Idol takes quite a sharp turn into the confusing when you reach Chapter 4: The Trials. This scenario confronts you with a shocking scene from an aviary, and there’s little, if anything, to connect this with the stories you’ve been experiencing thus far.

Of course, you should know by now that there’s more to this scenario than first meets the eye. So it’s up to you to dive in to the scene, work out what’s happening, and then wonder how this will turn into one big overarching plot that shocks and terrifies you in equal measures.

All Name Solutions
While there are only three people to identify here, you’ll also have to identify the birds in the aviary!
- This panel is best solved in tandem with the Triggers panel, as you’ll be relying on bird behaviour to identify many of them.
- Dialogue and the contents of the lockers in the staff room will help the most with the people.
- There are, however, only three people here and only one male name – trial and error will get you there quicker than you’d think.
- The scraps of paper must be pieced together to make sense of the writing on them, but this is rather easy – there are no red herrings here. If a sentence makes sense after pairing the scraps together, you’ve found a pairing.
- Some knowledge of bird anatomy can help a decent amount here, but it’s not necessary by any means. It just helps to know that birds are often named for their appearance.
- The keys that people have in their possession can help you make a decision regarding the two living people when paired with the feeding schedule and the current time of day (which is viewable inside the incubator hut).
All Trigger Solutions
This panel has you working out which birds were triggered by which triggers.
- The bracelet seems innocuous. Does it have any qualities that might fit a bird’s triggers, written on the scraps of paper scattered throughout the aviary?
- The green bird is counted as a trigger. What are the green birds doing right now?
- The green birds are saying, ‘I’m sorry’ – if this is mimicry, who are they mimicking? And why would someone be apologetic?
- There are smashed eggs concealed in a bush. Whose eggs might these belong to?
- Multiple birds are triggered by sounds, so you’ll need to think about the specific order in which the sounds in the aviary could have been provoked.
All Event Solutions
- There are lots of agitated birds, any of which could have killed the victim. The key here is to figure out what started the agitation. This is what began the series of events that led to this scene before you.
- The trigger panel is not in chronological order.
- The green birds are saying, ‘I’m sorry’ – if this is mimicry, who are they mimicking?
- The victim has obviously made some grave errors, but he’s a professional. What sort of event could cause him to be in such a state that he makes simple mistakes?
- While much of this panel deals with the past, there’s a fair amount that deals with what you can see right now.
