Why Was Laura Called To Silent Hill In Silent Hill 2?

Poor James Sunderland is having the worst day of his life when he returns to Silent Hill in Silent Hill 2 (2024). You can’t blame him though. If most of us got a letter from our dead wife telling us where to go, we’d naturally want to check it out.

Silent Hill 2 Remake: The Bliss And Stillness Endings, Explained

Silent Hill 2 Remake adds two new endings to the classic title. So what do they mean?

As James walks around the constant mist and defends himself against gruesome monsters, he runs into other people in the otherwise desolate town. Among them is the small child Laura, who is far less harmless than she looks and is not afraid to show it.

Why Was Laura Called To Silent Hill?

Laura turns to look at James in Silent Hill 2.

While Silent Hill has no problems accepting anyone who comes into the mist, it tends to lure in those who have some kind of darkness within. However, Laura seems to be the exception to the rule and came to Silent Hill due to her relationship with James Sunderland’s wife, Mary.

She befriended Mary during her stay in the hospital and the two would often talk about Silent Hill.

Before Mary’s passing, Laura received a letter from her describing a “quiet, beautiful place”, which she interpreted as Silent Hill, so she set off for the town in hopes of finding Mary.

What Is Laura’s Relationship With Other Characters?

James runs into Laura on the wall in Silent Hill 2.

It’s clear that Laura became very close to Mary in the short time they spent together, but she doesn’t have the same care or affection for the other characters.

She interacts with two of them: Eddie and James. Eddie is the first one she meets on the way to Silent Hill, and they become travel companions of sorts.

Silent Hill 2: What Happened To Angela?

Angela is one the major characters you meet in Silent Hill 2, and has a distressing background centered around her abusive family.

Though Eddie treats her courteously, Laura is quite rude to him, kicking and insulting him on various occasions for his weight and behavior.

When she meets James, she is somewhat hostile towards him, believing that he never really loved Mary. Throughout the game, she teases and tricks James, doing things like locking him in a room or pounding on piano keys to scare him.

Her relationship with James takes a serious turn when he decides to tell her that she won’t find Mary in Silent Hill because she’s dead. Laura responds by calling him a liar, but James remains firm that if Mary is here, it’s not the one that she cares about.

What Happens To Laura?

Laura looks up in the dark of Silent Hill 2.

While the other human characters all have an inner darkness that brings them to Silent Hill, Laura comes solely to look for Mary after also receiving a letter from her.

As a result, she doesn’t experience the Otherworld, nightmares, or even see that monsters are wandering around.

She is never shown in any real danger and believes that no one else is in danger either. The last time she is seen in the main game is in Room 312 of the Lakeview Hotel.

After James reveals Mary’s death, Laura leaves and isn’t seen again unless you get the ‘Leave’ ending where James and Laura leave Silent Hill together.

James learns from Mary’s letter to Laura that she always viewed her as a daughter, and this ending implies James may adopt Laura after they leave Silent Hill.

Laura isn’t seen in any other endings, but since Laura isn’t a target for Silent Hill, she is free to leave or stay if she wants.
