Transformers One Delivers a Win for Franchise Fans

Transformers One Delivers a Win for Franchise Fans

Key Takeaways

  • Transformers One’s success opens doors for more movies to explore origin stories and untapped facets of the Transformers franchise.
  • President of Hasbro Entertainment reveals plans for additional films with director Josh Cooley following on the success of Transformers One.
  • Part of the future of the Transformers franchise involves crossovers with G.I. Joe, though that could just be part of the strategy.

Since Transformers One was released earlier this summer, the new format has been met with financial and critical success. In fact, it’s met with so much success that it appears the people behind the animated origin story are officially looking to make more Transformers movies along the same lines as the flick that showed how Optimus Prime and Megatron became the robots everyone knows them as today.

Transformers One took a different approach to other movies based on the IP in more ways than one. It was not only the first major animated film since the original Transformers film hit theaters in 1986, but it was the first movie in the franchise to tell an origin story of the leader of the Autobots and the leader of the Decepticons. Along the way, Transformers One told the origin story of several well-known characters, such as Bumblebee (even if he’s never referred to as that name in the story), Soundwave, Shockwave and Starscream among others. It also happened to be the first major film in the long franchise, not to include any human compatriots. The latest entry was all robots, all the time.

Transformers One Laid The Groundwork For Similar Projects

No matter why exactly, Transformers One was so successful, it’s clear the people behind it want to seize on the opportunity and keep that success going. Speaking to Brands Untapped, President of Hasbro Entertainment, Olivier Dumont said there is a concerted effort to make more movies that are along the same lines as what director Josh Cooley put forth this year. While he admitted that it’s early days and because of that, there isn’t anything concrete, however “it’s never too soon to think about what’s possible.”

Cast

Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Hamm

Writers

Eric Pearson, Andrew Barrer, Gabriel Ferrari

Director

Josh Cooley

Dumont confirmed Hasbro has been talking to Cooley about future projects and it would seem the exec knows it would be foolish to turn away from an entry into the franchise that has especially been so popular among fans. “The Transformers franchise has such a rich history and passionate fandom,” Dumont said. “So there are so many facets that have yet to be explored in entertainment.”

Just how this will come about is still very much up in the air. The next Transformers movie will be another live-action entry expanding its cinematic universe by incorporating another Hasbro IP in G.I. Joe. That won’t be the only addition that focuses on robots and humans fighting alongside and against each other. The crossover is expected to be a trilogy after first revealing that the special forces group G.I. Joe exists in the Transformers universe in Rise of the Beasts. Just how that will be handled is still very much up in the air, especially since the G.I. Joe movies were critically panned and not as financially successful as Hasbro might have hoped. It’s possible those who helm these new films could reboot that side and introduce brand new characters. Or it could find some way to continue the story of the characters that have already been established.
