Sonic '06 Remake Is Being Considered By Sonic Team

Key Takeaways

  • Sonic X Shadow Generations producer Shun Nakamura apparently told fans he’d be up for a Sonic ’06 remake.
  • This could give the game the chance that some fans say it deserves…
  • …or just make it the target of mockery again.

If you were to ask a Sonic fan which game they’d like to see remade, you’re most likely to hear Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, or even Sonic Heroes brought up as contenders. What you’re very unlikely to hear is a huge cry for Sega to take another stab at the widely mocked Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), often referred to as Sonic ’06.

Despite that, a producer at Sonic Team would apparently be up for doing just that. According to reports on a Sonic fan meet-up in Indonesia, Sonic X Shadow Generations producer Shun Nakamura has said that he wants to work on a Sonic ’06 remake, and other producers didn’t shoot this down.

A Sonic ’06 Remake Would Seemingly Be Considered By Sonic Team

As reported by Tails’ Channel, Indonesian fans are sharing reports from a Q&A. Here, one of the producers is reported as saying that he would be open to a Sonic ’06 remake. The answer is said to have come from Shun Nakamura, a producer on Sonic X Shadow Generations.

“When asked if Sonic Team will remake or remaster past games like 2006, and hits like Heroes, Adventure 1 & 2, or even consider a Sonic Adventure 3, he says that old and new games remain appealing,” reads an account of the Q&A, translated into English by fans. “He has previously said he personally wishes for the opportunity to remake 2006.”

A remake of Sonic ’06 would certainly be interesting. While it is pretty much universally mocked by the gaming community at large – and even much of the Sonic community – there are those who say it had the potential to be a good game. Maybe with the same love and care that Sonic X Shadow Generations just received, that could be the case. Or maybe everyone would just be laughing at the kissing scene in 4K this time.

In any case, most fans would probably want another Sonic Adventure game first. The good news is that the head of Sonic Team recently said that he’d “love” to make Sonic Adventure 3, so it’s a very real possibility.
