Key Takeaways
- The anthology series Concord is set to have an episode that uses Concord’s setting.
- Series creator Tim Miller doesn’t regret making the episode.
- Miller says Firewalk Studios was incredibly invested and talented.
Concord is officially dead in the water following Sony’s closure of Firewalk Studios. The expensive, high-profile live-service game was ultimately a flop, shutting down after just two weeks after active player numbers dropped into double digits. It was a tough market to launch a pay-to-play hero shooter, and the sales numbers ultimately reflected that.
One of the more interesting aspects of Concord’s legacy is that the game’s universe is a setting for one of the episodes of the animated anthology series Secret Level, a collaboration between Tim Miller’s Blur Studio and Amazon MGM Studios. Each episode of Secret Level is set in a different video game universe, including Armored Core, The Outer Worlds and Spelunky. Concord was an interesting choice considering the game hadn’t been released yet when the episode was created.
The Concord Episode
There were doubts cast over whether the episode would air following the shutdown of Concord, but ultimately, a lot of people worked hard on creating the episode and there’s no sense in letting it become lost media. Secret Level creator Tim Miller has nothing but positive things to say about Firewalk Studios, Concord and the episode they created together.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Miller touched upon the failure of Concord. “There was no nicer, more invested group of developers than the team on Concord,” Miller says. “I honestly don’t understand why it didn’t work. I know that they were trying to do the best they could, and they were a talented group of artists, so I feel terrible for that.”
“I don’t feel bad that it’s part of the show, because I think it’s an episode that turned out really well, and you can see the potential of this world and the characters. If it’s the remaining vestige of that product, I hope the developers feel that it’s in some way worthy, just a little bit, of the blood, sweat and tears they put into it,” Miller finishes.
Miller also makes another salient point; though Concord is ‘dead’, series like Mega-Man (2018) and Unreal Tournament (2007) have no upcoming games, meaning they’re also ‘dead’ in a way.
Concord is an upcoming FPS from Firewalk Studios, part of the PlayStation Studios family. A PvP multiplayer title, it is slated for launch on both PS5 and PC in 2024.
