In the two weeks post-launch, the focus within Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket seems to have shifted from collecting to battling. The game imposes pretty strict limits on how often you can open packs and complete wonder picks but nothing on how many battles you can do. So, when coupled with the Lapras ex Event, players are flocking to the game’s competitive mode.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket’s Damage Cap
Shared on Reddit, a player named Lonk_From_Hirool showed how they achieved the maximum possible damage in a single turn—990.
The player’s Alakazam was facing the daunting prospect of a Moltres with 37 fire energies attached to it. The opposition Moltres ex had been sitting on the bench, accruing energies from another Moltres ex that was using the energy-stacking move Inferno Dance.
While in most cases, having 37 energy on a Pokemon in the TCG would be pretty useless, in this case, it played into Lonk’s hands. Alakazam’s Psychic does 60 damage, plus 30 for every energy attached to the opponent’s Active Pokemon. The 37 energy alone would have meant Alakazam dealt 1,110 damage, adding the 60 base from the attack, and it should have hit Moltres ex for 1,170. But instead, it only hit for a measly 990, implying the game has a hard cap on how much damage a Pokemon can receive.
It’s likely this cap, discovered by Lonk, who was almost certainly playing against themselves to test their theory, sits at 999, but as Pokemon deal damage in multiples of ten, it is rounded down to 990.
It’s a useless piece of information, given that you’ll probably never hit for this much, but one that’s nice to know.
