Regular attacks for ranged weapons in Divinity: Original Sin 2 do not consume ammo of any type. Just like swinging a sword does not require a consumable, using a bow similarly does not require one, if it were otherwise ranged classes would become extremely weak. All you need to do is to equip a ranged weapon that uses an arrow and use the attack action.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 – All Difficulty Setting Differences
Choosing a difficulty mode at the start of a new playthrough is the very first decision players are asked to make in Divinity: Original Sin 2.
However, one of the strongest tools in the Ranger’s toolkit is Special Arrows with unique effects, which need to be crafted, bought, or found in order to be used. The process of crafting a Special Arrow requires understanding the crafting menu, recipes, and which materials combine into what items. Here’s the breakdown.
How to Craft Special Arrows in Divinity: Original Sin 2
Special Arrows can be crafted by combining a Shaft and an appropriate Arrowhead in the Crafting menu. Here’s how to do it:
- Press the Crafting Menu hotkey.
- Drag and drop a Shaft and an Arrowhead into the open slots.
- Click Craft to get the special arrow in the inventory.
Once you’ve crafted a Special Arrow once, its recipe will automatically be added to the Recipe menu. The next time you want to craft it, it’ll be much easier to do through that menu. Note, however, that there are often multiple recipes for crafting a single item, and only the one you use manually or obtain the recipe for will be added to the Recipes menu.
How to Get Arrow Shafts in Divinity: Original Sin 2
The recipe for crafting an Arrow Shaft is simple:
Item |
Ingredient 1 |
Ingredient 2 |
---|---|---|
Arrow Shaft |
Cutting Tool or Bench Saw |
Short Stick |
Anything with an edge, like a knife, dagger, sword, or axe, qualifies as a Cutting Tool. Bench Saw is a fixed crafting station that players can encounter throughout the world in various locations, like a Blacksmith’s shop.
Short Sticks can be obtained by using a Cutting Tool or a Bench Saw on a Long Branch, and Long Branches can be obtained by using a Cutting Tool or a Bench Saw on a Log, which is a relatively common pick-up item.

How to Get Arrowheads in Divinity: Original Sin 2
Simple Arrowheads can be obtained by combining a Sharp Piece of Metal or Rock or any Bone with any Cutting Tool.
- Using Metal or Rock with a Cutting Tool produces 3 Arrowheads per attempt.
- Using a Bone with a Cutting Tool produces 5 Arrowheads per attempt.
Simple Arrowheads need to be combined with specific items to create Special Arrowheads. There are 15 special Arrowheads, each with a different recipe and alternate means of crafting. Generally, arrow crafting in DOS2 follows the principle of common sense. If an Arrowhead is combined with an Oil Barrel, the result will be a Slowdown Arrowhead, which can then be combined with an Arrow Shaft to create a Slowdown Arrow. Doing the same process with a Water Barrel instead will result in a Water Arrow.
Barring a few exceptions, Divinity: Original Sin 2 uses the following logic for arrow recipes:
