Williams worked at Quantic Dream for just shy of ten years, serving as the lead writer for both Star Wars Eclipse and 2018’s Detroit: Become Human. He announced his departure from the studio in August.

His new studio, Republic Games, aims to “make entertaining and meaningful experiences” with a focus on “giving players what they actually want.”

Republic Games’ new title is described as a “dark, mature fantasy RPG,” somewhere between Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Orwell’s 1984, in which “A tyrannical regime is brutally enforcing its ideology and crushing all dissent. But a faction of rebels seeks to overturn the tyrants and expose the lies at the heart of their doctrine.”

We believe there’s a broad base of RPG gamers who feel they aren’t being catered to anymore.

As part of the announcement, Williams says, “We believe there’s a broad base of RPG gamers who feel they aren’t being catered to anymore. They want a classic, traditional, timeless fantasy. They want a story that responds to their choices, giving them the freedom to go in any direction they want – rather than being told what to think about the story and characters. That’s the audience we’re making this for.”

Williams Wants To Work With Detroit: Become Human Actor

Connor from Detroit: Become Human.

We spoke to Williams ahead of the studio’s announcement, with the founder telling us that he’d love to work with Detroit: Become Human actors Bryan and Amelia Dechart.

Bryan played Connor in the 2018 title, an android police officer and one of the game’s three protagonists, and his wife Amelia featured as Traci, an Android used for adult purposes.

A few days ago, Williams appeared on the Dechart’s Twitch channel, DechartGames, with the pair telling him that they’d love to appear in the then-unannounced Republic Games’ new project. Williams coyly told me that “I’d like that as well”.
