You've Only Got Until January To Complete Pokemon TCG Pocket's Pokedex

How close are you to completing the Pokedex in Pokemon TCG Pocket? I’m still a way off, despite owning over 1,100 cards. It’s basics like Kakuna and Nidoking that I’m still missing, waiting for trading to be implemented because I’m reluctant to spend my pack points on anything other than the alternate arts of Gengar and Zapdos.

There’s a lot of cards to collect in Pokemon TCG Pocket, as evidenced by the fact that I still haven’t pulled two Gardevoir for the Mewtwo ex deck. But rather than chasing the meta, I’m chasing one card in particular: Mew.

Mew and Mewtwo have taken up appropriate roles in Pocket. Mewtwo is reviled, thanks to its horribly meta ex card that holds the PvP scene in a vicelike grip. Mew, on the other hand, is a mechanically useless card with beautiful art that you obtain as a reward for completing the Kanto Pokedex. It’s perfect, it will never feel oppressive, and it befits Mew’s magical qualities.

I’m sure I’ll get there eventually, but now I’ve got a timer. I need to complete the Pokemon TCG Pocket Pokedex before the next set drops, because after that I’ll be chasing another exciting card and leave the Genetic Apex expansion behind me.

When Is The Next Pokemon TCG Pocket Expansion?

The Pikachu ex card is shown in Pokemon Pocket.

Leaks suggest that the next Pokemon TCG Pocket expansion will drop in January 2025. Prominent and generally reliable leaker Centro Leaks suggests there is a mini-release in mid-December, but the next big drop the size of Genetic Apex will be on January 30.

Genetic Apex will presumably still be available after this, but we’ll be too preoccupied with shiny new goodies to spare it a second thought.

The leaker does caveat this with the fact that they datamined this information and it’s subject to change, but it seems unlikely that the date will shift wildly. A three month release cycle is standard for live-service games, and we’ll be ready for a change of scenery when we open packs by the end of January. To be honest, I’m ready now because the lack of new content after the initial grind is dull, but I appreciate the time to complete my Pokedex and hunt the alt arts for Zapdos ex and Gengar ex.

What Is The Next Pokemon TCG Pocket Expansion?

We currently have no idea what the next TCG Pocket expansion will entail, and the leaker provided few clues. While we’re apparently due a Magnemite and Bulbasaur event in December, we don’t even have a name for the next expansion.

That said, could you have guessed that Genetic Apex would be about Pikachu, Charizard, and Mewtwo? The latter I could see, but the others have no relevance to the expansion name.

What do I personally want? Thanks for asking. I need some Gen 2 love. I’m not getting it from Pokemon Go, so I need TCG Pocket to do it for me. A Raikou ex card would fit perfectly into a lot of my decks thanks to my love of Lightning-types, and I’d open an inordinate number of packs to get alt art variants of the legendary beasts.

Moving through the generations might be a good way forward. While there are plenty of others included in Genetic Apex, it’s primarily a Kanto expansion – hence the Mew reward for completing that first Pokedex. Moving onto Gen 2 next, Gen 3 in April, Gen 4 in July, etc. would be a fun cadence, and older fans like myself would appreciate the timeline.

In the meantime, focus on Genetic Apex. This is the only time in this game when you’ll have only one expansion to open packs of, the best chance you have to complete a Pokedex. It’ll be tough, a long slog of grinding currencies and crossing your fingers as you make Wonder Picks, but your time is now. Go get that Mew. I believe in you.
