Key Takeaways
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard makes a playful reference to Garrus from Mass Effect 2.
- Unsurprisingly, this comes in the form of a companion telling us they’re too busy to talk to us because they’re in the middle of some calibrations.
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard is full of other easter eggs too, and not just references to other BioWare games.
“Can it wait for a bit? I’m in the middle of some calibrations”. If you’ve played Mass Effect 2 before, you definitely just read that in Garrus’ voice. It was the bane of our playthroughs – the sign that we’d already exhausted all of Garrus’ dialogue, and he had nothing else to say to us.
It’s become such a joke amongst fans that BioWare itself is in on it, referencing it in Mass Effect 3. Now, it’s even being referenced in a different series entirely, as the calibrations joke has been spotted in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Bellara Steals Garrus’ Calibrations Excuse To Get Out Of Speaking To Rook
Bellara’s line here is unmistakably a reference to Garrus in Mass Effect 2 – and will immediately give flashbacks to anyone who was trying to become besties/more than besties with the turian. The amount of times we must have heard that in our playthroughs is ridiculous, and now it’s here to haunt us too.
Dragon Age: Inquisition also referenced calibrations in war table banter between Cullen and Josephine, but this is the first time we’re hearing the full line again.
Of course, this isn’t the only reference to BioWare’s other huge RPG series that it snuck into Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Last week, the studio gave us Mass Effect-inspired armour to celebrate N7 Day, which made up for it being so light on actual Mass Effect news.
Some references to non-BioWare properties have also been found. As we covered yesterday, there’s a reference to Elden Ring in Emmrich’s recruitment mission, as you can find a note that reads exactly like a player message in a FromSoftware game.
Then, there are all the expected shoutouts to previous Dragon Age games. We’ve found a few so far, including a reference to the protagonist from Dragon Age: Origins, the Hero of Ferelden. You can also find huge cheese wheels in the game, which is an ongoing joke in the series.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the long-awaited fourth game in the fantasy RPG series from BioWare formerly known as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. A direct sequel to Inquisition, it focuses on red lyrium and Solas, the aforementioned Dread Wolf.
