One Pokemon TCG Pocket Promo Event Seems Like a Matter of When, Not If

One Pokemon TCG Pocket Promo Event Seems Like a Matter of When, Not If

The Pokemon TCG Pocket craze is in full swing, as the game hit over 30 million downloads across all mobile platforms, partly thanks to the game’s promos and events. The latest one features the ever-loveable Normal Pokemon Meowth, with event duels giving players a chance to acquire powerful EX Lapras copies. Such events don’t just bring in players, they keep them engaged in the game. It’s only a matter of time before it promotes one of its most popular ‘mons to bring new players in and keep its current ones checking in.

Like with Pokemon Go, the Pokemon franchise wants to target more casual players with Pokemon TCG Pocket. The game still delivers a satisfying combat experience, despite having simpler mechanics compared to the actual trading card game. Like the real thing, however, the main draw of TCG Pocket looks to be pulling the strongest and/or best-looking cards. Now that Pikachu. Mewtwo, the Gen. 1 starters, and Meowth have had their share in the limelight, there’s one more Pokemon that the game can promote to get even more mainstream appeal.

Why a Ranked Mode for Pokemon TCG Pocket Would Be a Double-Edged Sword

Pokemon TCG Pocket seeks to bring players a mobile approach to the iconic game, and a potential ranked mode has its pros and cons.

Eevee Seems to be an Inevitable Event Feature in Pokemon TCG Pocket

Eevee and their evolutions are the logical choices regarding Pokemon TCG Pocket’s future promo events. There are eight Eeveelutions so far:

Pokemon Type
Vaporeon Water
Flareon Fire
Jolteon Electric
Umbreon Dark
Espeon Psychic
Leafeon Grass
Sylveon Fairy
Glaceon Ice

Only Jolteon, Vaporeon, and Flareon are available in
Pokemon TCG Pocket
so far, as they’re included in the game’s very first booster pack called Genetic Apex.

The Eeveelutions constantly rank high up in official popularity rankings. A Gamewith survey, published on December 2023, found that Sylveon, the Fairy-type Eeveelution, is the fourth most popular Pokemon in Japan. Eevee also ranks fourth in the Kanto region in the latest Pokemon of the Year results. Even in the 2024 community-run surveys in r/Pokemon, Eevee ranks fifth, right behind their Dark-type evolution Umbreon.

Eevolutions Have Some of the Most Collectible Card Artwork

While Eevee is quite easy to get for hobbyists, its evolutions are harder to get. The rarest Eeveelution cards in Pokemon TCG often have gorgeous artwork by highly-regarded artists, too. A great example is Holofoil Flareon, which artist Kyoko Umemoto painted with bright orange and yellow hues juxtaposed with a cold and dreary background of a grassy field at night.

Some Eeveelution cards are highly prized because they’re near-impossible to get, like the Umbreon Gold Star, which came from a limited-edition pack that was only distributed from March to September 2009. Creating similar-looking cards for the Eeveelutions in Pokemon TCG Pocket would be appreciated by long-time collectors and new players alike.

Pokemon TCG Pocket Could Rollout Remaining Eeveelutions as Event Cards

The Eeveelutions definitely deserve to be featured on Booster Packs, and this sentiment is backed by the fact that the IRL TCG recently released the Prismatic Evolution expansion featuring them. Pokemon TCG Pocket could give popular Eeveelutions like Umbreon and Sylveon their own packs and give them immersive highlight cards. The game could take it a step further and create deck accessory art featuring the remaining Eeveelutions. Having a complete Eevee family on a playmat would be nice to see. Even PROMO or Battle Event Cards featuring alternate art of existing Eeveelutions in the game would surely be a hit among avid collectors.

The current Eeveelutions deck ranks at the bottom (or doesn’t rank at all) of most Pokemon TCG Pocket Genetic Apex Deck tier lists. However, that might change once stronger critters like Sylveon get introduced into the Dex. As such, competitive players should adjust their expectations accordingly once the Eevee events do materialize.
