From a gameplay standpoint, Helldivers 2 is fairly simple. Check the major order, dive down to a planet, complete the order, and kill every bug or bot along the way. However, the folks at Arrowhead Studios, especially game-master Joel, have ensured that there is an overarching story that conveys the flow of the war on two fronts.

Helldivers 2 Proves Easier Can Be Better
“No pain, no gain” isn’t always the best policy. Sometimes, making it easier on the players can increase playtime and activity.
These mini story arcs usually revolve around a particular objective, like liberating Malevalon Creek, liberating a mech-facility, or saving children for no reward. Over the past few weeks, Helldivers have been receiving Major Orders that have been working towards setting up the Democracy Space Station – Super Earth’s very own Death Star. However, everytime players think they’ve done enough, it seems Joel throws out yet another major order.
Players Are Getting Tired Of The Prolonged DSS Storyline
While any pushback against major orders is considered treason and will be dealt with swiftly by the Ministry of Truth, it seems that Helldivers 2 players are getting tired of the DSS being in its final stages without getting any payoff. Every time it looks like the station will be operational and we’ll finally find out what it does, Joel throws in another major order.
Last week, players had to rescue “disenfranchised families” from the ongoing conflict and relocate them to the DSS, where they’d be safe. On an unrelated note, Super Earth high command announced that the DSS had been staffed and will be operational imminently. Helldivers throughout the galaxy celebrated, until the next major order was issued.
Some of the comments speculated why the DSS isn’t operational despite being staffed already. One claimed that it may take some time to train the staff of what will be Super Earth’s flagship space station, however, they were reminded of the ten-minute training program that Helldivers are put through before being launched into the war.
While the idea was quite intriguing when it started off, one major order after another, without any actual development has started to become a drag for players.
Either there’s still a lot of work to do on the station, or Arrowhead is throwing out filler major orders till the dev team can get everything ready for the next step. Evidently, the DSS is going to shake a few things up in Helldivers 2, as the game has been building on it for weeks. Perhaps it will be the avenue whereby the Illuminate are finally introduced to the game.
