In the world of Fairy Tail,there are countless forms of magic, most of which can be effective in combat. However, the most iconic type of magic has to be elemental magic. For this list, we’ll focus on one of the most powerful elemental magics: Ice Magic. Ice Magic itself can be further divided into three categories; regular Ice Magic, Ice-Make Magic, and Ice Devil Slayer Magic.

Unfortunately, despite its immense strength and versatility, not many characters are specialized in Ice Magic in Fairy Tail. So we decided to widen the pool a little bit and include other powerful characters that can do Ice Magic despite it not being their main specialty. With that out of the way, these are some of the most notable ice magic users in Fairy Tail, ranked based on their strength.

8 Makarov Dreyar

The Master Of Fairy Tail

Makarov Dreyar is the Guild Master of Fairy Tail. Most days, Makarov looks and acts just like a normal, albeit a tad too energetic, old man. In truth, Makarov is actually one of the most powerful Mages on the Ishgar continent. In fact, he is one of the Ten Wizard Saints of Ishgar, a title given only to mages who are recognized as leagues above others.

Makarov’s specialty is Giant Magic and Light Magic. That being said, he is quite proficient in other types of magic as well, including Ice Magic. In terms of pure Ice Magic capability, Makarov can’t hold a candle to others on this list, but as one of the Ten Wizard Saints, he can still easily engulf an entire building with his Ice Geyser.

7 Ultear Milkovich

The Daughter Of The Ice Saint

Despite her young age, Ultear has been part of numerous elite guilds and organizations, such as the esteemed Magic Council, the terrifying Cult of Zeref, the dark guild Grimoire Heart, and the independent guild Crime Sorcière. Her vast knowledge and power are sought after by good and evil people alike. That’s why Ultear is extremely valuable as an ally, but also incredibly dangerous as an enemy.

The reason why Ultear is feared and admired by mages throughout the world is because of her expertise in Time Magic. She can practically play around with the concept of Time. However, as the daughter of the Ice Saint Ur, Ultear is also quite proficient in Ice-Make Magic. In fact, one of her strongest Ice-Make spells, Ice-Make: Rosen Krone, is basically a copy of her mother’s spell of the same name.

6 Lyon Vastia

The Sub-Zero Emperor

Lyon is an expert in Ice-Make Magic, just like Gray Fullbuster. Not only that, they are both students under the same master, the Ice Saint Ur. The main difference between the two is the type of Ice-Make Magic that they use. Gray is a master of Static Ice-Make Magic, which means he can create inorganic objects—such as ice spears, ice shields, and other non-living objects—and has to manually control them if he wants to move his creation.

Meanwhile, Lyon is a master of Dynamic Ice-Make Magic, which means he can create living creatures—such as ice birds, ice tigers, and other living creatures—that can move by themselves without the need for Lyon to constantly control them. From an ice mouse that can silently slip through the enemy’s defenses to the massive snow dragon that can crush anything in its path, Lyon’s Ice-Make Magic can cause so much chaos and damage on the battlefield.

5 Bloodman

The Cursed Copycat

Bloodman belongs to a group called the Sprigan 12, an elite unit that served directly under the Black Wizard Zeref for the Alvarez Empire. Bloodman specializes in Curse Magic, particularly the terrifying Curses of the Nine Demon Gates. As if that’s not dangerous enough, Bloodman also has the ability to simulate the power of some of the members of the Dark Guild Tartaros, such as Silver Fullbuster’s Ice Devil Slayer Magic.

Thanks to that ability, Bloodman can unleash various Ice Devil Slayer spells, with the strongest one being the Ice Devil’s Rage, a spell that allows him to release an icy breath that can freeze anything on his path. Needless to say, Bloodman is stronger when he uses the magic that he specializes in, i.e. the Curse Magic. That being said, the fact that he can use Ice Devil Slayer Magic—arguably one of the highest, if not the highest, form of ice magic—means his ice magic ability is higher than some of the mages here, which is why he stays right in the middle of this list.

4 Ur

The Noble Ice Saint

As briefly mentioned before, Ur is the teacher of Gray Fullbuster and Lyon Vastia. As an expert Ice-Make Mage, Ur is powerful enough to be considered one of the Ten Wizard Saints. Unfortunately, she lost her life before she could claim that title. In order to save her beloved pupils from the rampage of Deliora, one of the most dangerous and destructive demons in the world, Ur sacrifices herself and loses her life in exchange for freezing Deliora in an eternal ice prison.

Unlike Gray and Lyon, who each specialize in certain types of Ice-Make Magic, Deliora can use both static and dynamic Ice-Make with ease. From a prosthetic leg made out of ice to a freezing rose garden that will bloom and pierce everything in its surroundings, Ur can create anything with her Ice-Make Magic. Her most powerful spell, however, is Ice-Make: Ice Volcano. Upon activation, this spell will crack the earth beneath her opponent, and from within, a whirlwind of freezing ice shards and ice blocks erupts to knock her opponent down, rip them to pieces, or freeze them to death.

3 Invel Yura

The Ruthless Winter General

• Strongest Ice Magic: True-Ice Kamui
• First Appearance: Episode 287

Similar to Bloodman, Invel Yura is also a member of the notorious Spriggan 12. Not only that, Invel also holds the position of Zeref’s Chief of Staff, making him essentially the Black Wizard’s right-hand man, known by many as the Winter General. Aside from the usual spells that can freeze people to death, Invel found numerous unique ways to utilize his Ice Magic, such as restricting his victim’s free will with his Ice Collar or turning people into mindless puppets with his Ice Lock.

Invel’s strongest spell by far has to be the True-Ice Kamui. Upon activating this spell, Invel’s body will be covered by an armor made out of ice which allows him to freeze absolutely everything. He can even make somebody who is immune to extreme cold, like Gray, shiver. Unfortunately, no matter how strong Invel Yura might be, he is still a user of the regular Ice Magic. He is nothing compared to the top two Ice Mages on this list.

2 Silver Fullbuster

The Mighty Ice Devil Slayer

Silver Fullbuster is Gray Fullbuster’s long-lost father. Gray thought that his father had lost his life alongside his mother decades ago. Unbeknownst to him, Silver was actually turned into an undead by a powerful necromancer from Tartaros, a deranged mage named Keyes. Since Silver had no other option but to join Tartaros and serve the enemy, he decided to use his second chance at life to learn one of the most powerful Ice Magics in the world, the Ice Devil Slayer.

While wielding this magic, Silver can freeze an entire town with just a wave of his arm. As if that’s not terrifying enough, Silver can also unleash the Ice Devil’s Rage, which is the Ice Devil Slayer equivalent of the infamous Dragon Slayer’s Roar. If Natsu turns his breath into an intense jet fire with his Dragon’s Roar, Silver turns his breath into a massive blizzard that will destroy everything in sight. For anyone wondering, Silver’s Ice Devil’s Rage is way more powerful than Bloodman’s imitation.

1 Gray Fullbuster

The Ultimate Ice Mage

There are many powerful mages on this list, and all boast their mastery in different kinds of Ice Magic. However, the reason why Gray Fullbuster, a young man from the famous guild called Fairy Tail, manages to stand on top of them all is simply because he possesses all three main categories of Ice Magic. He mastered Ice-Make Magic thanks to Ur. He taught himself regular Ice Magic during his years as a mage in Fairy Tail, and he inherited the terrifying Ice Devil Slayer Magic from his father.

During a fight, Gray usually relies on his trusted Static Ice-Make Magic. He will conjure an ice shield to defend his friends, create a massive ice hammer to knock out his opponent, and even freeze them completely if necessary. However, when he faces an abnormally strong enemy, Gray activates his Ice Devil Slayer mode and goes on a rampage, freezing and destroying anything and anyone in his path with his Ice Devil’s Zeroth Destruction Fist.

Nobody else on this list can be this versatile and destructive at the same time. Sure, other characters are arguably stronger than Gray in the series, but when it comes to pure Ice Magic prowess, Gray Fullbuster reigns supreme as the strongest Ice Mage in Fairy Tail .
