Sonic Frontiers 2 Concept Art Potentially Teased By Sega

Sonic Frontiers 2 Concept Art Potentially Teased By Sega

Key Takeaways

  • Earlier this week, Sonic Frontiers celebrated its second anniversary.
  • To mark the occasion, Sega shared a picture of Haruki Satomi standing in front of a piece of Sonic concept art.
  • That concept art hasn’t been shown before, leading some to believe that it’s actually from the next mainline game.

Sonic the Hedgehog fans think that Sega might have sneakily shared a first look at concept art for Sonic Frontiers 2 in a post celebrating the game’s second anniversary.

As anyone who has played Sonic Unleashed, Colors, Lost World, and 06 will know, the Blue Blur has had his fair share of divisive 3D outings. Perhaps the most divisive of them all, though, is 2022’s Sonic Frontiers, which embraced a more mature story while finally giving Sonic a proper open world to roll around at the speed of sound in.

Maria is going to get absolutely wasted in the upcoming threequel.

While Frontiers did a lot right for Sonic’s biggest game yet, it also had its fair share of annoying elements, from frustrating boss encounters to the strangely realistic design of the Starfall Islands. Ignoring the awful pinball minigame, most Sonic fans agree that Frontiers showed how much potential the series has with this new direction, something that a sequel would hopefully fully capture.

Did Sega Just Show Off Concept Art For Sonic Frontiers 2?

Although Sega hasn’t officially confirmed that Sonic Frontiers 2 is in the works, it seems inevitable considering how well the first game sold and how far Sonic Team could take the open-zone approach now the groundwork has been laid. That’s especially true on the game’s second anniversary, as it’s possible that Sega just teased the unannounced sequel with a bit of concept art.

Over on Twitter, the official Sega account celebrated Sonic Frontiers’ second anniversary by sharing a photo of Sega CEO Haruki Satomi. The post points out that Satomi is wearing a Shadow-inspired outfit that he’s absolutely rocking, but the real thing to pay attention to is the concept art that’s shown behind him, which pictures Sonic running towards some kind of castle.

Sonic fans quickly noticed that the concept art that’s being shown behind Satomi looks like it’s linked to Sonic Frontiers in some way. Although you might think it’s just a previously unseen piece for Sonic Frontiers that’s being shared for the occasion, some fans, such as Twitter user SpeederLight1, think that it might actually be for Sonic Frontiers 2.

The image is a little hard to see since the post mostly focuses on Satomi’s outfit, but it looks awfully similar to the realistic style that Frontiers used, only with a location that many don’t seem to recognise. Some have theorised that it’s an early version of Kronos Island, but the vast majority of fans in the comments think that it’s actually for the next mainline game.

We won’t know for sure until Sega officially announces Frontiers’ sequel, but considering it’s now been two years since the first game released, it does make some sense for Sega to start sneakily hinting at what’s coming next.
