Key Takeaways
- For as iconic and important as Metal Gear Solid is, many younger gamers simply aren’t familiar with the series.
- That’s part of the reason why Konami is remaking Metal Gear Solid 3 in the form of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.
- The game is being developed with younger generations of players in mind, the kind that may not be as familiar with who Snake is.
As far as video game characters are concerned, few are as iconic as Metal Gear Solid’s Snake. However, for as iconic as Snake is, not many gamers, particularly younger gamers, are familiar with the series that he’s part of. In other words, no, Snake is not from Super Smash Bros., though that would be pretty cool if he were.
It’s with that lack of familiarity in mind that Konami elected to remake Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Indeed, according to producer Noriaki Okamura, part of the purpose of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is to introduce younger players to Snake and the larger world of Metal Gear.

Snake Hasn’t Had A Game In Nearly A Decade
In an interview with GamesRadar, Okamura affirmed that many young players simply aren’t familiar with the larger Metal Gear series, which prompted the creation of Delta: Snake Eater. “One of the things that really sparked us to do the remake in general is because we realized that a lot of the newer, younger generation of gamers aren’t familiar with the Metal Gear series anymore,” he said.
That might be hard to believe, considering how important Metal Gear is to gaming as a whole, but it does make sense. The last mainline Metal Gear game was The Phantom Pain in 2015, and until the Master Collection Vol. 1, prior games weren’t accessible.
As a result, the upcoming Delta: Snake Eater is being built with future generations in mind, per Okamura. “It was basically our mission, our duty, to kind of continue making sure that the series lives on for future generations.” he added. “After all, we leave behind much more than just DNA, as Solid Snake would say — but again, who is Solid Snake?”
And if there was any confusion about starting with Snake Eater as opposed to the original MGS, Okamura noted the importance of starting chronologically. “That’s where the original story started,” he concluded. Hopefully, once Delta: Snake Eater does release, younger players will be able to appreciate its importance to the industry, just as Konami is intending. And hopefully, this is the start of more Metal Gear releases.
