In My Hero Academia, Izuku Midoryia’s class gets the spotlight for most of the series, as he forms relationships with his various classmates and learns to control his abilities. But the world Kohei Horikoshi created is a lot bigger than class 1-A, and we see other classes as well as other schools, meeting all sorts of new students.

With so many potential heroes sharing screen time, it’s hard to narrow down some of the most interesting side characters in the pack. Whether because of how they use their quirks, how they interact with the main cast, or just how unique they are, these are some of the other students who are worth paying attention to.

Yo Shindo

“Grand”/ Quirk: Vibrate

Horikoshi’s stab at designing a pretty boy, Yo Shindo is from Ketsubutsu Academy, and he has a quirk called Vibrate, which allows him to generate earthquakes. When first introduced, he seems like a very polite, even overly friendly, guy, but this turns out to be a facade.

He’s actually extremely strategic, and willing to change his personality to get the upper hand. That complexity makes him stand out as a leader and as a force to be reckoned with among the other students.

Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu

“Real Steel” / Quirk: Steel

Since Kirishima is such a beloved character, why not double the fun? Tetsutetsu is his counter-part in UA’s class 1-B, and, like his quirk, Real Steel, Tetsutetsu has an unbreakable spirit that shines through in his intense personality. He and Kirishima are pretty much evenly matched in power, but his personality has more of a bite.

We saw this in his fight with Mustard, where he took the straightest forward approach possible, and we saw it again when he out-endured Todoroki’s Powerhouse quirk by sheer force of will.

Camie Utsushimi

“Illus-o-Camie”/ Quirk: Glamour

Utsushimi, from Shiketsu High, first ‘shows up’ in the provisional license exam before making a real appearance during the remedial course arc. While she seems shallow, she remains impressively unshaken by almost everything around her, and she leads their approach on connecting with the children they have to reach.

Camie’s quirk has also led to two of the funniest scenes in the anime, as she represents Todroki, Bakugou, and then Hawks in a glittery fan-cam version of their real selves. Whatever you think of her, she’s instantly recognizable in a crowd for both her way of speaking and her pretty design.

Neito Monoma

“Phantom Thief”/ Quirk: Copy

If there’s one thing you can say about Monoma, it’s that he has personality in spades. Love him or hate him, the ultimate defender of 1-B certainly makes an unforgettable impression throughout the series. From his consistent mocking of class 1-A to his versatile Copy quirk that allows him to copy others’ quirks, he refuses to fade into the background.

With his role in the final battle demonstrating how he’ll work as a support hero later in his career, Monoma’s character arc concludes with the concession that, whatever you think of him, he’ll make a great hero.

Itsuka Kendo

“Battle Fist”/ Quirk: Big Fist

Like Momo Yaoyorozu, Kendo’s the leader of her class, and she takes her role as ‘big sister of class 1-B’ very seriously. Her unfailing presence, her intelligence (both physical and emotional), and her ability to work with others make her an invaluable resource in stressful situations.

Even though she’s a bit of a tomboy, she’s also willing to put herself out there by participating in the beauty pageant and showing off her range. Whether she’s modeling or throwing (giant) hands, she’s definitely a student we’d have liked to see more of.

Nejire Hado

“Nejire-Chan”/ Quirk: Wave Motion

As bubbly and sweet as she is dangerous, Hado is a member of UA’s Big Three. Beyond her powerful Wave Motion quirk, which easily puts her at the top of her class, Neijre wasn’t always so confident in her drive to learn everything she could about others.

Her bluntness in pursuing knowledge (much like Izuku’s drive to take notes) pushed others away, and she was briefly a very cold and distant person before her relationship with Amajiki and Togata let her feel like she could open up again. She’s not only interesting as a person, but she’s necessary to balance the group dynamic of the Big Three.

Tamaki Amajiki

“Suneater”/ Quirk: Manifest

Despite having one of the most powerful quirks in the series, Amajiki suffers from severe anxiety. It’s this mental struggle that makes him a down-to-Earth and engaging character. For everything that everyone else does effortlessly, Amajiki has to first overcome himself and then the enemy.

He also has an inspiring, and very sweet, relationship with his classmate Togata that shows his development as both a hero and a friend. It enriches both characters’ arcs to see them cheer each other on.

Mirio Togata

“Lemillion”/ Quirk: Permeation

As the charismatic and upbeat leader of UA’s Big Three, Mirio has an unflinching sense of humor even in the darkest times. From his extremely unorthodox introduction on, he’s presented a breath of fresh air compared to the seriousness of the rest of the surrounding heroes.

That’s not to say he doesn’t work just as hard, if not twice as hard, as everyone else. In fact, in the story we learn that his quirk isn’t what makes him powerful, it’s his creativity in using it. And, by the end, he’s on track to take All Might’s place as the number one hero.

Mei Hatsume

Hero Support / Quirk: Zoom

While a lot of attention is paid to those in the hero course, where would they be without their ever-updated support gear? Throughout the entire story of My Hero Academia, Hatsume pulls off some near-impossible feats of engineering to allow our heroes to keep improving.

Without the tech-obsessed Hatsume, we wouldn’t have Izuku’s AirForce gloves or Kaminari’s lightning targeting system, among other innovations. And, even beyond her practical capabilities, she’s an entertaining presence that spikes the energy of every scene she’s in.

Hitoshi Shinso

Hero Name Unknown / Quirk: Brainwashing

The underdog with a villain’s quirk and hero’s heart, Shinso has remained a consistent presence in UA’s hero course. While he started out by leaning into the perception that others had of him as an antagonistic person, he turned out to be a hard worker who sincerely wants to help others.

By the end of the series, we know that he’s fully joined the hero course, but it’s up in the air during the course of the main plot’s events whether he’ll be in class 1-A or 1-B. Either way, he’s not only popular in his own right, he’s also the mentee of one of the most popular characters in the series: Eraserhead.
