Why Squid Game Is Ending With Season 3

Why Squid Game Is Ending With Season 3

Key Takeaways

  • Season 3 will be Squid Game’s last due to the creator’s choice to end the story.
  • Hwang Dong-hyuk never intended for Squid Game to run more than one season.
  • Netflix’s hit series will end with Season 3, but the universe is expanding with various adaptations.

After Squid Game shot to the top of Netflix’s charts many were hopeful the dark Korean thriller would continue. Netflix renewed the series for not just one but two more seasons, but the creator has since revealed why Season 3 will be Squid Game’s last.

Squid Game performed well beyond all expectations. When the K-Drama was released in 2021, it became not only Netflix’s most successful foreign language series of all time but also its most-watched TV series period. Audiences were enamored with the grim Hunger Games-style story, which saw 456 desperate players compete in deadly children’s games for a shot at a massive cash prize. Season 2 of Squid Game is set for release in December 2024, and will continue the story of Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), the game-winner who vowed to end the Frontman’s operation at the end of Season 1.

When a show is as successful as Squid Game studios are often eager to provide more. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed to The Hollywood Reporter, that he never had any plans for the show to continue beyond one season, but ended up finding a way to carry on with the story after the show received such a massive response. The one idea the creator chose to continue in Season 2 was the story of Gi-hun going back into the game to “put a stop to the game.” This story will carry both Seasons 2 and 3 of Squid Game. “Throughout seasons two and three, it’s going to be about that very journey by Gi-hun that you’re going to be following, both physically and emotionally,” Hwang said.

Why Is Season 3 Squid Game’s Last?

Given Squid Game’s viewership numbers, it would be easy to see Netflix renewing the series far beyond Season 3, however, the decision to end the thriller with its third season came from Hwang himself. “When I was thinking about the idea for the ending of season three, I think it sort of naturally came to me that this was the finale,” Hwang said.

“When I was thinking about the idea for the ending of season three, I think it sort of naturally came to me that this was the finale. I believed that with that story, I was able to tell everything that I wanted to tell through the story of Squid Game and also in the perspective of Gi-hun as a character, and I thought that we don’t need any further stories from here.”

While it’s no doubt disappointing to some fans that Squid Game won’t continue for many years to come, it is reassuring to know that Hwang has a strong vision for the remaining story, which hopefully means Seasons 2 and 3 can continue the high bar that was set in Season 1. Even with the flagship Squid Game series ending soon, the universe Hwang has created is already rapidly expanding. Squid Game has a video game on Netlfix, a reality TV competition (Squid Game: The Challenge), and it’s said an English-language version of the show is moving forward in development with David Fincher attached. While Season 3 will be Squid Game’s last, it definitely won’t be the last time the series is heard from.

Squid Game Season 2 will be released on Netflix on December 26, 2024.
