The History Of The Specter Family In The Sims

The History Of The Specter Family In The Sims

There are plenty of famous families throughout the timeline in The Sims universe, and one of them that’s recently returned after a length absence is the Specter family. Debuting in The Sims 2 and returning in The Sims 4: Life & Death expansion, Olive Specter has quite a past if you dig for it.

The Sims: A Complete History Of The Goth Family

Anyone who knows anything about the Sims series knows a thing or two about the Goth family. But what’s the history behind them?

With a sizable family graveyard near the property each time they appear in the series, a history with the Grim Reaper, and Nervous Subject seeming to have undergone a name change in recent lore, too, here’s what you need to know about the Specter family history.

The Sims 2

Olive Specter marries a victim.

Debuting in The Sims 2 back in September 2004, the Specter family is one of the most peculiar in the games‘ history. Residing on Dead End Lane in the game’s curiously out-of-this-world Strangetown neighborhood, family matriarch Olive Specter has quite the peculiar home lot: there are 19 graves in the yard, with only Olive Specter and her niece Ophelia left alive when you first load into the family in a new save on this particularly haunted lot.

Olive’s backstory is a sad one if you go through her her family tree or memories. She was once engaged to Earl E. DeMise who abandoned her at their wedding altar (and who was said to have died almost immediately after doing so). From here, Olive would be married three times in her life, but all of her husbands seemed to end up dying before her, taking up several of the places in the family plot. With Olive frustrated by death’s looming presence, she sought out the Grim Reaper after another husband passed away.

Grim has a tattered cloak and exposed ribs in The Sims 2, looking much more macabre than in later iterations, but somehow upon meeting him herself, Olive fell madly in love. In her memories, she remembers WooHooing with the Grim Reaper not long after her second husband passes, and she has her son Nervous Subject not longer after – as an elder, which isn’t biologically possible in The Sims.

Nervous Subject is a boy who doesn’t have a father logged in the family tree, meaning he’s not biologically related to any of Olive’s husbands. After being removed from Olive’s care for neglect, Nervous would be placed with the Beakers, a family of scientists who are presumed to have used him for their experiments, given his twitchy nature as an adult.

Who Is Buried On Olive Specter’s Property?

With a lot that practically qualifies as a cemetery itself, you’ll need to dig into Olive’s memories to piece together who each Sim is and what happened. Since many of these deaths are unexplained or connected to the family in any way and Olive remembers them dying of unnatural causes, a common theory is that Olive Specter may be a serial killer.

People buried on the Specter family’s lot include:

  • Family members Lerato and Peponi Muenda, Olive’s parents who both died in a fire, as well as sister in law Willow and her husband Creon, both of whom drowned.
  • Four of Olive’s past loves, as well as some of their family.
    • Earl E. DeMise and his brother Tim Le DeMise, both of whom died of electrocution.
    • Rigger Mortis was Olive’s first husband who died in a fire.
    • Hugh Thanasia died in a fire.
    • Ichabod Specter is one of the few Sims in the yard who died of natural causes with old age.
  • Random Sims who don’t seem connected to the family.
    • Deaths by electrocution included Patrick Jones and Lyla Grunt.
    • Deaths by drowning included Luc Smith and Brenda Zaidi.
    • Deaths by starvation included Melissa Sims, Vicki Sims, Jessica Ebadi, Benjamin Cho, Danielle Greaves, and Seth Zaidi. Some of these characters were service NPCs like maids, exterminators, and pizza delivery drivers.

According to her memories, the earliest death Olive remembers is that of Danielle Greaves, a pizza girl who starved to death when Olive was a teen, while the most recent was Brenda Zaidi, a mail carrier who died not long before you load into the Specter family save.

The Sims: A Complete History Of The Pleasant Family

The history of the Pleasant Family has been rather unpleasant at times.

The Sims 4

Though The Sims 4 canonically takes place in an alternate timeline, Olive Specter returned to the series in The Sims 4: Life & Death expansion pass that launched on Halloween 2024. The household consists of an adult Olive Specter who works as a mortuary assistant in the Undertaker career, her fiance Layne Coffin, as well as Olive’s teenage son, Nyon Specter, who’s a big part of the Order of Lenore seeking to reunite the legendary tarot deck. The family is on the cover of the expansion pack.

Some members of the family have rather notable traits that die back to their lives in the parallel Sims 2 universe. Olive is Alluring, which probably explains all the husbands, but them all dying has left her feeling pretty Macabre. Nyon, meanwhile, has the Chased by Death trait. He doesn’t have the Child of Grim trait iconic of the Grim Reaper’s children in the expansion, but he does curiously have the scythe mark behind his left ear like those with the trait. A curious lot trait for the house is being On Hallowed Grounds.

The Sims team confirmed in a developer stream ahead of the pack’s launch that Nyon was Nervous Subject’s name before the Beaker family ran their experiments, referring to Nyon as “pre-Nervous.”

Olive seems to hate the Gomes family, quite far in the red with Esther and Tziporah when you first load into the family. She has a friendly relationship with Nyon and loves Layne quite a lot, but Nyon and Layne have a somewhat negative relationship to one another.

While the graveyard in town is now technically located on another lot at the Eternal Rest cemetery, the Specter home is directly next door with an easel set out for scenic Painting views. While most of the 19 graves from The Sims 2 have been relegated to a vague crypt nearby or background gravestones that can’t be interacted with amid the flowerbeds nearby, there are four notable tombs just in front of the Specter family residence.

These belong Earl E. DeMise, Rigger Mortis, Hugh Thanasia, and Ichabod Specter – Olive’s four lovers throughout her life. Each one has an engraved epitaph regarded in your Notification Wall as a Haunting Epitaph with their name, that they were married to Olive at the time of their deaths, as well as a pun about their death-related names (ie Rigger Mortis’ epitaph mentioning a “stiff upper lip”).

Rigger Mortis and Ichabod Specter’s graves reward you with the Wheel of Fortune and Suspension tarot cards for your collection, respectively. You can get them by using your intuition on their graves in Crow’s Crossing after beginning the tarot card collections quest at any local Tarot Tome.

As a fun easter egg, if you count all ten background graves, the two tombstones in the Specter’s side yard, the crypt, the empty grave out front, and all four of Olive’s late husbands, there are 19 gravestones still on or around the Specter family lot.

Talking to everyone in the house about rumors around Ravenwood leads to some interesting peeks into the Specter family lore. Olive says she appreciates Zuleika Izadi (whose surname is an anagram of Zaidi, the last name of the last death Olive remembers in The Sims 2) not asking about “her past,” and mentions that Nyon has been asking questions about his father that Olive prefers not to answer. Olive is also quite likely to pop over late at night, after 10PM – hope your other SIms are night owls.

With enough pressing between Nyon and Layne, you’ll learn that Layne believes Olive is connected to the passing of her late husbands and is not only not afraid of this, but is excited by the idea of being killed by Olive. Nyon says Layne is constantly leaving the crypts, and that he once saw Layne pat the tombstone of one of Olive’s late husbands in the yard out front. Maybe he’s the one who installed that empty fifth grave out front with Olive’s other late husbands?

If you’re still interested in playing with the elderly version of Olive Specter from The Sims 2, you’re able to download a family lot of her and her niece Ophelia from the Gallery in The Sims 4. She’ll function as a completely separate Sim from TS4’s Olive and the pair don’t know one another, so you’re able to place both of them in the same save file without issue. You can also find Nervous Subject in a family with younger versions of the Beakers.
