When Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was first announced in 2022, there was little reason to believe that it would ever come to a non-PlayStation console. After all, the Death Stranding IP was owned by Sony at the time, and the game’s predecessor hadn’t been released on Xbox or Nintendo platforms. In addition, it was revealed that DS2 would run on Decima, a proprietary engine that was developed internally at PlayStation subsidiary Guerrilla Games. Since Sony was so heavily involved in the development of the game, both in publishing and producing, a multiplatform release (other than a PC port) seemed out of the question. Death Stranding 2 was practically guaranteed to be an indefinite PlayStation console exclusive, not unlike The Last of Us or God of War.
Now that the original Death Stranding is on Xbox, the situation surrounding DS2‘s exclusivity has changed significantly. On November 7, 2024, developer Kojima Productions and publisher 505 Games announced and simultaneously released a port of Death Stranding: Director’s Cut for the Series X/S. Alongside this surprising shadow-drop, KojiPro confirmed in a press release that it had bought the Death Stranding IP from Sony Interactive Entertainment, thus making this Xbox port possible. Since the franchise is currently under the complete control of the studio, it’s highly possible that Death Stranding 2 will come to Xbox and PC at some point, despite it being published by Sony.

Death Stranding 2 Will Likely Come to Xbox and PC at Some Point
Death Stranding’s Release Pattern May Give an Idea of When to Expect DS2 on PC and Xbox
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to release as a PlayStation 5 exclusive sometime in 2025. It’s unclear when the game will come to other platforms, if at all, but looking at the release pattern of its predecessor may give fans an idea of what to expect. The first Death Stranding was released exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on November 8, 2019, right at the tail-end of the console’s life cycle. The game came to Windows PCs shortly thereafter, on July 14, 2020.
A definitive re-release of the game, titled Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, was released as a PlayStation 5 exclusive on September 21, 2021. This version of the action-adventure title didn’t land on PC until March 30, 2022. Eventually, 505 Games, the company that published Death Stranding‘s PC port, brought the Director’s Cut to macOS, iOS, and iPadOs on January 30, 2024. The game came to Xbox Series X/S, in addition to Amazon Luna, exactly five years after the release of its original PS4 version.
Death Stranding 2 May Land on Windows PC as Early as 2025
If Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is released on PS5 in early or mid-2025, it’s entirely possible that the game will come to PC later that year, assuming it follows the same pattern that the original DS did. The original Death Stranding came to Windows in nine months, whereas the Director’s Cut landed on the platform in seven months. It’s safe to assume the gap between the release of the PS5 and PC versions of DS2 would be similar in length.
It May Take a Few Years for Death Stranding 2 to Come to Xbox
At best, it may land on Microsoft’s consoles around three years after the release of the game’s PS5 version, given that this was how long it took for Death Stranding: Director’s Cut to make the jump from PlayStation to Xbox. If Death Stranding 2 does come to Xbox in 2028, there’s a chance that it may skip the Series X/S entirely and launch exclusively on the next-gen Xbox console, just as its predecessor skipped the Xbox One.
