Exeggutor Ex

160 HP

Considering Exeggutor Ex is a stage 1 Pokemon, it may be the tankiest card in Pokemon Pocket pound for pound. By turn two, you can have a Pokemon on the field that can take attacks from basic Pokemon for over six turns.

Exeggutor Ex only requires one energy to attack, allowing it to dominate Pokemon far above its usual level. The downside, however, is that Exeggutor is coin-based, so some turns may yield no damage. While Exeggutor Ex’s damage is a threat against early-game monsters, if your opponent counters with their own boss monster, it could be an uphill battle for Exeggutor Ex as 40-80 attack is low damage for an Ex.

Venusaur

160 HP

While Venusaur Ex is generally the stronger card, the base version of Venusaur is still incredibly tough to defeat. Venusaur heals for 30 HP after each attack, which often forces opponents to deal over 200 total damage to knock it out.

Like many Grass-types, Venusaur’s longevity can be extended by using Erika, which heals plant Pokemon for an additional 50 HP. With four energies set up and Erika in play, Venusaur can effectively gain 90 HP each turn—a boost nearly equal to a stage 1 Pokemon’s full HP—further enhancing its already impressive durability.

Golem

160 HP

Unfortunately, despite its high HP, Golem is among the weakest Stage 2 Pokemon in the game. It requires four energy to attack and lacks any additional effects. When Golem does manage to attack, it suffers 50 damage, effectively making it more fragile than its HP would suggest.

Brock can help accelerate Golem’s energy setup, but ultimately, Golem and its pre-evolution Graveler are too slow to keep up. However, Geodude, as a Fighting-type, can be effective early on since many top early-game Pokemon are Dark or Normal-types. Golem’s Fighting-type advantage isn’t particularly relevant, as it can already one-shot strong lightning, dark, and normal Pokemon like Ex Wigglytuff, Ex Pikachu, and Muk regardless of their weakness.

Dragonite

160 HP

One of the trickiest Pokemon to build around, Dragonite is resource-intensive and needs to withstand multiple hits to reach its potential. Dragonite is one of the few characters capable of dealing 200 damage while also targeting benched Pokemon, which often forces opponents to use up many resources trying to bring it down.

Since Dragonite requires both lightning and water energy to attack, stalling for time is crucial. As a result, Dragonite decks typically include other tanky Pokemon. Gengar Ex

170 HP

The Ex version of Gengar boasts a hefty 40 HP increase over its regular form. Gengar Ex is a disruptive force, with an ability that disables all supporter cards, effectively breaking up combos, reducing drawing power, and forcing opponents to chip away at Gengar Ex’s large HP with basic attacks.

Gengar Ex’s main drawback is the weak stats of its pre-evolutions, Gastly and Haunter, making it a mountain to climb to reach Gengar Ex. While Gengar Ex can withstand hits from top-tier monsters like Mewtwo, the board may be at a disadvantage by the time Gengar Ex makes it to the field.

Blastoise Ex

180 HP

Compared to Venusaur Ex and Charizard Ex, Blastoise Ex lacks high attack power or standout effects but makes up for this with energy efficiency. Squirtle, Wartortle, and Blastoise can all attack on the turns they are summoned due to their relatively low energy requirements. Blastoise can also deliver 160 damage if you manage to stack five energies, though this is more of a bonus than a consistent strategy.

With high HP and energy efficiency, Blastoise Ex poses more of an early-game threat than other Stage 2 boss monsters. Its modest attack is more imposing early on since Blastoise will likely face basic or Stage 1 Pokemon rather than other Stage 2 monsters.

Machamp Ex

180 HP

With the second-highest HP, Machamp Ex is a straightforward boss monster. It requires only three energy to attack, deals solid damage, and can tank several hits, even from Stage 1 monsters. Machop and Machoke are also energy-efficient and have high HP, and pairing Machamp Ex with cards like Ex Marowak makes it an early-game threat.

Although Machamp Ex’s impressive HP, its damage is relatively low. Most Stage 2 Pokemon can withstand a hit from Machamp, it’s crucial to get Machamp on the field while its previous forms are dealing damage before opponents establish an energy engine to sustain their stronger attackers.

Like many boss monsters, Charizard Ex requires significant energy. Running Moltres is an effective way to keep Charizard’s Crimson Storm fueled. With Charizard’s high HP, if its energy engine is set up properly in the early game, it becomes the best Pokemon in Pokemon Pocket.

Venusaur Ex

190 HP

With nearly 200 HP, Venusaur is the tankiest Pokemon in Pocket Pokemon’s Genetic Apex set. Despite its already impressive 190 HP, Venusaur’s true durability shines with its ability to heal 30 HP with each attack, making it incredibly challenging for certain decks to generate the burst damage necessary to take down this gigantic plant.

The trade-off, however, is Venusaur’s relatively low damage output. Its basic attack only hits for 60 with two energies, while its more costly secondary attack deals 100, which is respectable but still limited. Given that Bulbasaur and Ivysaur are also energy-inefficient, upgrading to Venusaur Ex quickly is ideal as it’s the best grass Pokemon in the game. Caterpie’s ability to fetch any grass-type Pokemon from your deck makes it a reliable deck-thinning option for Venusaur Ex decks, helping you reach Venusaur faster.
