Grey Talon is an incredibly powerful hero in the right hands and often uses high altitudes to his advantage. Mastering mobility and aiming is part of his learning curve, and learning this is well worth the effort, no matter how you choose to play him in the game.

Deadlock is in alpha, so everything in this guide is subject to change in the future.

Grey Talon Overview

Using Grey Talon's Guided Owl in Deadlock.

Grey Talon is all about high damage per second (DPS). He’s a powerful hero when it comes to taking out enemies, and his base damage is good enough to rely on pretty early in the game.

This makes him a great pick for anyone who’s new to the game. Of course, you’ll need to learn his abilities and how they’re best used, but there’s something else that makes him so useful in Deadlock.

A major part of his gameplay relies on how good you are at aiming and how well-versed you are with Deadlock’s mobility.

Since one of Grey Talon’s abilities focuses on being in the air for a while, dodging and sprinting are great ways of maneuvering the map when you’re chasing or running away from enemies.

While Grey Talon has a lower DPS of 55 starting out, his ability to aim from afar helps you choose your opponents. His vitality isn’t too great either (550), but it is enough to help you push a lane early on if you have a teammate around. Focusing on the right upgrades and abilities will help you early in the game.

Lower your mouse sensitivity, and feel free to rely on your [Right Mouse Click] to aim when at long-range. When you’re at close range, shoot arrows without zooming in (hipfire).

Grey Talon’s Abilities

Grey Talon's abilities as showcased in Deadlock's menu.

Pretty early on in your gameplay, Grey Talon performs best when you’re comfortable aiming at enemies at long-range. With that out of the way, Charged Shot is an incredibly reliable ability to upgrade early on. This helps you deal with heavier enemies faster, giving you a charged-up shot against opponents trying to push a lane against you.

Rain of Arrows is your ultimate tool when it comes to mobility. It lifts you up, giving you a massive height advantage. This alone gives you the upper hand (quite literally) in a fight, along with multiple shots in one go every time you shoot an arrow. Use these freely — farming minions for souls, clearing up a lean, chasing down an enemy etc.

Name

Description

Charged Shot

By triggering this, you charge up a powerful shot that can be held for a while before shooting (hold [1] or [Left Mouse Click]).

Rain of Arrows

Launch yourself high up, and glide slowly. When midair, you gain Weapon Damage and multiple shots every time you shoot. You can also press [SPACE] to cancel the hover.

Immobilizing Trap

Throw a trap that arms itself within a few seconds. Once ready, it will trigger the moment an enemy enters its radius (six meters) and immobilizes them for a short while.

Guided Owl

Once triggered, there’s a short cast time followed by letting out a spirit owl that you can control. Upon impact, it explodes, damaging and stunning enemies in its radius. You can also accelerate the owl’s movement by holding down [Left Mouse Click]. Each kill with the Guided Owl, you gain permanent Spirit Power.

Immobilizing Trap is a tricky and nifty tool to get good at. There are multiple ways of getting the best out of it, and its versatility makes it a viable option when planning attacks in advance. However, this may require map awareness based on which lane you’re pushing or defending.

Guided Owl allows you to do some area-of-effect (AOE) damage while also scouting your vicinity within a matter of seconds. Upgrading this ability to its max can help you be a resourceful scout for the team who’s also able to deal plenty of damage when need be. However, it’s important to note that guiding the owl can be a little challenging due to its movement controls.

Upgrade Guided Owl to the max in Sandbox Mode and practice its movements before entering a match.

Upgrades And Builds For Grey Talon

Buying items for Grey Talon in Deadlock.

Early in the game, Grey Talon has incredible prowess at pushing a lane. However, his health needs a check, too. Combining items like Mystic Burst and Enduring Spirit helps balance weapon damage and vitality.

Towards the mid-game, you’ll be shifting your focus on making the most of your abilities, and items like Improved Cooldown and Superior Cooldown will ensure that you have your powers ready whenever you need them.

Stage

Items

Early Game: Focus on improving vitality and weapon damage.

Extra Charge, Mystic Burst, Headshot Booster, Hollow Point Ward, Extra Spirit, and Enduring Spirit.

Mid-Game: Focus on using abilities as quickly as you can, one after the other.

Enchanter’s Barrier, Active Reload, Improved Cooldown, Improved Spirit, Mystic Shot, Slowing Bullets, Superior Cooldown and Improved Burst.

Late Game: Focus on maximizing Spirit Damage and improving overall DPS.

Mystic Reverb, Boundless Spirit, Rapid Recharge, Mystic Vulnerability, Diviner’s Kevlar, and Surge of Power.

Late game is all about maximizing your Spirit Damage and unleashing Grey Talon’s complete potential as a DPS hero. To do this, items like Boundless Spirit and Surge of Power should be items you invest in. Additionally, you can also think of a few situational items you can purchase.

  • Reactive Barrier: This automatically deploys temporary Spirit Shields and Bullet whenever you are Stunned, movement locked, Chained, Slept, or Immobilized.
  • Spiritual Overflow: You gain bonus Spirit Power by charging up with your bullets when fighting enemy heroes.

Best Playstyle Strategy For Grey Talon

Grey Talon’s highly effective Spirit Damage snowballs over time, making you the ultimate DPS hero in the team if you know what you’re doing. Every ability in his kit serves an important purpose based on what you want to pull off when pushing a lane or simply trying to eliminate the enemy team.

Use Charged Shot For Enemies Behind Cover

Compared to your normal arrows, the Charged Shot has a much larger hitbox. Due to this, you can fire it when an enemy is hiding behind a wall/cover, or simply too far for you to aim precisely.

Use Rain Of Arrows For Mobility

Rain of Arrows gives you more than just a few seconds to hover and glide as you please. Use this to your advantage when attacking an enemy, but also consider being a scout when you do so. Pair this with Guided Owl to make the most of your scouting abilities.

Use Immobilizing Trap To Limit Enemies’ Movement

If you’ve been playing in a lane for a while, you’ll likely be able to predict how your opponents are moving. In a fight, setting the trap can block their movements, and give you enough time to eliminate them. You can also use this ability to clear out minions that may be in your way.

Use Guided Owl For Some AOE Damage

Even though much of the Guided Owl ability lies in its scouting and long-range damage, it can be used to clear out a group of enemies. You can also use it before entering a fight to ensure there’s enough fighting space, without minions bothering you.
