How Risk of Rain 2 Is Making Good on a Major Controversy

After Risk of Rain 2’s first DLC, Survivors of the Void, launched to overall positive reviews in 2022, expectations for the game’s future DLCs were naturally high. However, when Risk of Rain 2’s next DLC finally launched in 2024, it turned out to be quite the controversy, at least initially.

What was expected to be a cause for celebration quickly turned out to be a proper controversy for Risk of Rain 2 when the Seekers of the Storm DLC was released and introduced several game-breaking bugs to the game. By now though, the development team has already resolved some of the major technical issues this DLC faced, while also revealing plans for future updates that will continue to steer this new era of the game in a favorable direction.

Risk of Rain 2’s Seekers of the Storm DLC Controversy Explained

Based on early previews and sneak peeks ahead of the DLC’s release, Risk of Rain 2’s Seekers of the Storm DLC was shaping up to be a game-changer, introducing a new tier of items, new Survivor playable characters, survivor skins, and new maps among other content, which were all things that the game arguably needed at this point in its lifecycle. Unfortunately, despite all the fun new buildcrafting tools that this DLC introduced to the game, a handful of technical issues quickly stole the spotlight from this DLC, leading to players review bombing the DLC on Steam.

Ultimately, this DLC introduced several bugs to the game, but three bugs in particular proved to be especially troublesome:

  • Low frame rates could negatively affect players’ movement speed, attack animations, damage output, and health.
  • Loot items could become unable to be interacted with.
  • The final boss Mithrax could become invincible.

What made things such a controversy is that these bugs affected the game regardless of whether players owned the new Seekers of the Storm DLC.

What to Expect from Risk of Rain 2’s Seekers of the Storm 2.0 Roadmap

In a video posted to the Gearbox YouTube channel, the development team acknowledged the controversy behind the Seekers of the Storm DLC, claiming that the initial bugs have already been fixed with Risk of Rain 2’s most recent update and that player feedback will continue to shape this new era of the game into what fans initially expected. These future updates, named the Seekers of the Storm 2.0 updates, will come in three phases, with a variety of additional bug fixes throughout the roadmap as well.

Seekers of the Storm 2.0 Phase One: Items and Elites

This first part of Risk of Rain 2’s roadmap will consist of reworks to some of the new items, as well as some enemy balancing changes, specifically to Twisted and Gilded Elite enemy types. The items that will be rebalanced in this update are said to include all but one of the new items introduced in the Seekers of the Storm DLC, with some receiving minor buffs, while others will receive full reworks.

Seekers of the Storm 2.0 Phase 2: the False Son Boss

Details for the phase two and phase three updates are currently sparse as the studio is currently focusing on the phase one update, but it’s been revealed that this update will focus on rebalancing the False Son boss fight, including the arena layout, enemy density, and adjustments to the False Son’s defenses and attack moveset. This update is also said to rebalance multiple additional bosses in Risk of Rain 2 as well.

Seekers of the Storm 2.0 Phase 3: Survivors

The final phase of the new roadmap is aimed toward rebalancing the three new survivors added in Risk of Rain 2’s Seekers of the Storm DLC. Again, details about this future update are still uncertain for the time being, but players should expect buffs across all three characters.
