This post has spoilers for One Piece.

Key Takeaways

  • The World Military Draft recruits top fighters into the Marines like Fujitora and Ryokugyu, showcasing their strength and backstory.
  • Fujitora’s past as a military chief shaped his humane justice ideology, leading to conflict within the Marines.
  • Fujitora possesses the Zushi Zushi no Mi Devil Fruit, strong Haki, and is one of the series’ strongest characters despite limited screen time.

The Marines are one of the most powerful organizations in One Piece. They are the upholders of justice, so they are responsible for keeping people safe from pirates and other criminals. In order to keep everything in control, the Marines require top-notch fighters who can take down any opponent.

Finding such combatants is not always easy, so the Marines have to be on their toes. One of the main ways the Marines recruit new soldiers is through the World Military Draft. It came into existence because the World Government wanted to round up all the good fighters from the affiliated kingdoms. Most notably, the World Military Draft allowed the World Government to recruit Fujitora and Ryokugyu. Both of them were instated as Admirals, which is the second-highest position within the Marines. This was a big testament to the strength of both fighters. As the two were introduced after the timeskip, there is still a lot that fans do not know about them. However, Oda has expanded upon the past of both fighters.

Fujitora’s Past As A Military Chief

Fujitora from one piece

Fujitora was born 54 years ago on an unknown island in the Grand Line. He grew up to become the military chief of the Aoi Kingdom. He held the position until the country was destroyed by a war. Fujitora’s actions made him a war criminal, and, as a result, he was hounded by the other side. While there is no concrete evidence, it is very likely that Fujitora blinded himself after the war was over. He possibly saw many atrocities being committed and, since he could not stop all of them, decided to blind himself.

If we lose credibility just by admitting fault, we didn’t have any in the first place! –Fujitora

Following the destruction of the Aoi Kingdom, Fujitora traveled to Soja Island. Here Fujitora fell prey to his gambling addiction. He lost a lot of money at a gambling house, and, consequently, he was forced to work as a bodyguard. It was during this time that his power caught the World Government’s attention. The organization was impressed by Fujitora’s strength, so it decided to nab him. The World Government bought the gambling house and drafted Fujitora into the Marines.

Fujitora’s Past Affected Him On Many Levels

Fujitora experiences have played a crucial role in shaping his current ideology. It has been confirmed that Fujitora follows Humane Justice. As a believer in this form of justice, Fujitora’s primary goal is to save human lives. He strongly believes that it is more important to protect people than to capture criminals. Fujitora’s Humane Justice has made him an easy target for his fellow Marines.

For starters, he made Akainu angry by apologizing to the people of Dressrosa. This, coupled with his inability to deliver Monkey D. Luffy, led to Fujitora’s banishment from the Marine headquarters. Akainu ordered Fujitora to not show his face until he had captured Monkey. D. Luffy. Another instance of Fujitora following his ideology is when he allowed the Revolutionaries to escape with the slaves who were trapped in Marijoa. This decision enraged Ryokugyu, who couldn’t believe an Admiral was helping the Revolutionaries.

Fujitora Has Not Changed His Beliefs

As previously stated, Fujitora used to be the Aoi Kingdom’s military chief, and he was involved in a fierce war in which the entire empire was destroyed. It is likely that the other side was hellbent on erasing the Aoi Kingdom from existence. So, they must have utilized evil tactics that led to the deaths of countless innocents. Fujitora, being the military leader, might have felt that it was his responsibility to protect the people.

Since Fujitora was unable to save people from the Aoi Kingdom, he decided to do a better job as an Admiral. This is why Fujitora does not care about upsetting his higher-ups within the Marines.

Fujitora’s Devil Fruit Ability

Fujitora possesses the Zushi Zushi no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to manipulate gravity. He used the power for the first time in the Dressrosa arc, where he created a massive hole inside a gambling den. In the same arc, Fujitora demonstrated the other uses of his ability. He brought down meteors from the sky, which caused a great deal of damage to the surroundings. Fujitora can also use it to make objects float in the air. It is unclear whether he has awakened his Devil Fruit, but fans shouldn’t be surprised if he has.

Aside from his Devil Fruit, Fujitora possesses incredibly strong Haki, as evidenced by his clashes with Sabo and Luffy. His Observation Haki observation, in particular, is immense, as it allows him to fight despite being blind. Fujitora probably has great control over his Armament Haki as well, but fans have yet to see it in action.

It is quite apparent that Fujitora is one of the strongest characters in the series, but his screen time has been rather limited. For this reason, it is hard to measure Fujitora’s strength accurately. So, One Piece fans will hope the Admiral is more involved in the Final Saga.
