Black Ops 6 Is Much More Successful Than Modern Warfare 3

Key Takeaways

  • Treyarch Studios says sales for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 are up 60% on PlayStation and Steam when compared to 2023’s Modern Warfare 3.
  • Modern Warfare 3 received some largely negative reviews from players and critics for its short and lackluster campaign.
  • Black Ops 6, on the other hand, has received a much more positive response from the community and is breaking records for the franchise.

Sales for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 are up 60% on PlayStation and Steam when compared to last year’s entry, Modern Warfare 3, according to Treyarch Studios developer Miles Leslie. While Black Ops 6 has been heavily praised by both fans and critics for its stellar campaign, Sledgehammer Games’ previous Call of Duty title was blasted for its short and lackluster story mode, which is likely one of the reasons for its poor sales when compared to this year’s entry.

Following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, Black Ops 6 became the first Call of Duty title to launch day one on Xbox Game Pass, and it’s been a huge success for both Microsoft and Call of Duty publisher Activision. According to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Black Ops 6 broke records at launch, becoming the “biggest Call of Duty release ever” with a record number of day one players. The shooter also resulted in Xbox’s lucrative subscription service spiking in users, as Nadella says Game Pass saw an increase in subscribers when Black Ops 6 hit the service.

Black Ops 6 Sales 60% Higher Than Modern Warfare 3

While it has already been made clear by Microsoft that Black Ops 6 is a massive success, Associate Creative Director for Treyarch Studios, Miles Leslie, tells the BBC (via InsiderGaming) that sales on PlayStation and Steam were 60% higher for Black Ops 6 than they were for 2023’s Modern Warfare 3. While the reasoning behind the increase in sales on the two platforms will remain speculation, it’s possible that the negative reviews surrounding Modern Warfare 3‘s short campaign was one of the reasons for its poor sales when compared to this year’s Call of Duty title, which received largely positive reviews from both fans and critics.

In the same interview with the BBC, Leslie discussed the impact that putting a brand-new Call of Duty game on Xbox Game Pass has on the franchise. While Microsoft reported a record-breaking launch for Black Ops 6, Treyarch’s associate creative director believes it allowed people who might be on the fence about purchasing to give it a shot, especially those who might not have played a Call of Duty title for quite some time. But now the studio’s biggest challenge is keeping players engaged for the game’s full life cycle, but Leslie says Treyarch has its “finger on the pulse of the community” to analyze and fix things right away.

As for new content, fans can already check out the recently released Nuketown, with even more goodies on the way later this month. Season 1 of Black Ops 6 and Warzone is set to kick off on November 14 with a plethora of new content for both titles, including a new Resurgence map for Warzone and plenty of new weapons, modes, operators, and multiplayer maps for Black Ops 6, all of which will be completely free.
