These two games share similar features. They both have romance options, fantasy, choices matter, and lore that runs deep. Despite their similarities, both games have stark differences as well. We have compiled some of the major differences to determine which game comes out on top.
7
Combat
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Dragon Age used to maintain the option to turn turn-based combat on and off, up until The Veilguard. Combat is not made to feel challenging, but rather satisfying and enjoyable. Fighting enemies won’t be super easy or super hard unless you make it so.
Because Baldur’s Gate originated from Dungeons & Dragons, and the game was created under a D&D ruleset, those unfamiliar may see this as challenging. The combat is turn-based, dice-based, and requires some strategic thinking. Even combat between hostile peasants may prove challenging because your attack has a chance of failing.
6
Character Creator
Baldur’s Gate 3
Dragon Age has had lackluster character creator screens in the past. The Veilguard is definitely the best it has ever been. There are even settings to reduce the detail of pieces of hair in the graphics settings. Baldur’s Gate 3 has a better character creator screen simply for having more options. There are over 100 skin tones and tons of hair options.
One of the better parts of BG3 is the mod support. You can use mods for any game, but when the game itself was made to support mod management at launch, it makes things easier. This means installing hundreds of new hairstyles, outfits, and more.
Curly hair options in video games have always been lackluster. Depressing, even. Baldur’s Gate 3 has 15 curly hair options. The Veilguard has around 35 options. The graphics for hair are more detailed and realistic in Veilguard.
5
Beginner Friendly
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Dragon Age is the more beginner-friendly game of the two. Any type of gamer can jump into a Dragon Age game and be able to play without difficulty. The combat is simple; your only job is to select attacks. Following quests is also relatively simple.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Is Already Better Than Inquisition
The opening of Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a big step up from the series’ previous instalment.
On the other hand, you’re required to understand some basics about Dungeons & Dragons to understand what’s going on in Baldur’s Gate 3. Gameplay mechanics and details will make no sense to people who are not familiar with this style of game. For example, if you find a cool new weapon it will not say “34 Physical Melee Damage”, it will say something like “1d8+1 Slashing Damage“.
4
Exploration
Baldur’s Gate 3
Outside of quest locations, there isn’t really a ton of exploring opportunities in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. You can’t go wandering off somewhere cool just because. Every area has a purpose and a limit. If you try exploring, you’ll soon realize the game is more linear. Because of that, it takes around 45 hours to beat on average.
Compare that to Baldur’s Gate 3 — thanks to everything you can explore, it’s a hefty game that can take anywhere from 68-200 hours to complete, depending on the person and additional game content. Larian Studios is no stranger to true CRPGs that require you to devote your life to playing them.
3
Character Development
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
BioWare is known for certain gameplay mechanics, such as how romance plays out and keeping up with your companion’s moods. The way the story content is crossed over throughout the series is unique to BioWare.
Characters you create, world events you triggered, and people you romanced will all come back when it comes to a BioWare game. This is part of what keeps the fanbase around for a long time. After years of waiting for the next installment of the game, you will get to potentially see your old main character, the world you created, and all the characters you know and love. For example, the Inquisitor from Inquisition returns in The Veilguard.
BG3 instead emphasizes strategy, prioritizing builds, and the opportunity for different possibilities in combat. It also includes favorites such as romance, choices that matter, and your personal character having their own lore, but The Veilguard makes this more of a focus.
2
Side Content
Baldur’s Gate 3
Dragon Age is perceived as open-world but is more controlled and linear than you may realize. Games from this series are not popular because of how many hours you can put in them and DA will be on the shorter end when compared to BG3. It has over 51 side quests, which sounds like a lot, but Baldur’s Gate 3 has over 76.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a true open world. The world is larger and allows for more interaction between random NPCs. Locations and quests can go unmissed all playthrough long. BG3 is a longer game because of this.
1
The Winner – Baldur’s Gate 3
- Longer playtime
- True open world
- Mod support
Dragon Age is easier to digest than Baldur’s Gate 3 and the gameplay mechanics and open world are near cookie-cutter. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a highly vast, more detailed world and gameplay experience, but that comes with its own unique characteristics. Characteristics such as enjoying D&D rulesets and turn-based combat.
It is also much, much longer, which may or may not be ideal depending on the person. When it comes down to a winner, we choose Baldur’s Gate 3 for all the more options it has to offer. If you can get past the learning curve of the D&D mechanics, you will never put down the game.
