Resident Evil Village

Since its last chapter, the plot of Resident Evil 9 has been a huge mystery. As the franchise brought to life an intense journey for protagonist Ethan Winters in Resident Evil 7 and Village, many have wondered where Resident Evil 9 will take the series next. In the Winters saga, the Megamycete played a huge role, as it was the source of the Mold that was keeping Ethan alive this whole time. According to these fresh leaks, the Mold could potentially show up again, which could be a blessing and a curse for the story.

An onslaught of fresh leaks regarding the nature of Resident Evil 9 comes from an unnamed playtester via Biohazard Declassified. From potential protagonists to major plot spoilers, these unconfirmed leaks could signal a huge new chapter on the horizon. What’s more surprising is that, according to these claims, the Mold will continue to play a significant role in the narrative. If true, there are pros and cons to continuing this plot point further into the franchise.

Wrapping Up the Winters Saga in a Trilogy

Despite Ethan’s death at the end of Village, he still lives on through his daughter and wife, Rosemary and Mia. The former received her own DLC with Shadows of Rose, while Mia’s whereabouts following the events of Village are unknown. However, if these leaks hold any weight, it could bring the Winters saga full circle with the Mold. According to the leaks, fan-favorite characters Leon S. Kennedy and Jill Valentine investigate an island where The Connections resides. As the company responsible for creating Eveline and experimenting with the Mold, The Connections has been a massive mystery in the Resident Evil franchise.

In Resident Evil 7, it was revealed that Mia worked for The Connections, and her time with them may not be over. As Eveline’s caretaker, Mia’s work with the sketchy bioweapon engineering organization has been glossed over so far in the series. The new leaks suggest that clones of Eveline are being made with the Mold on the island, which could open the door to bringing Mia and Rosemary back into the spotlight one last time.

The Mold was originally discovered by Mother Miranda. This fungus was lying dormant in a cave under the small Eastern European town that serves as
Village
‘s setting.

The Case Against Bringing Back the Mold in Resident Evil 9

An Uphill Battle With Making the Mold Stronger Than Ever

On the one hand, it would be great to get some official closure to the Winters family in a trilogy. However, on the other hand, making the Mold even more intimidating than its Megamycete core could prove to be a difficult task. Village and the Shadows of Rose DLC seemingly marked an end for both the Winters family and the Megamycete, but only time will tell. Crafting a use for the Mold that is even more harrowing than the Megamycete and Mother Miranda’s experiments may fall flat in comparison.

Although the Shadows of Rose DLC potentially presented a finale for Ethan and his family, the conclusion of the expansion was still open-ended. With Rose embracing her powers, it seems as though the franchise could be setting her up for a larger role in Chris Redfield’s Hound Wolf Squad. Unfortunately, until the next chapter is ready, this will remain pure speculation.

The Megamycete is also referred to as The Black God, with Mother Miranda claiming to be its prophetess.

Of course, since these various leaks have not been confirmed by Capcom, they should be taken with a grain of salt. Leaks and rumors can be exciting, but until Capcom makes an official announcement, what Resident Evil 9 has in store for players is unknown. If the Mold returns, though, it will hopefully be even more terrifying than it already was in previous chapters.
