It dominated the no. 1 spot on the streaming giant for weeks and had become the most-watched show, surpassing 1.65 billion hours viewed in its first 28 days and even scored an American adaptation. The show’s intense storyline features desperate individuals competing for the prize of $4.56 million by playing deadly versions of children’s games. Its haunting visual styles and interesting characters captivated the audience. Fans were so into it that its iconic symbols, including the participants’ numbered uniforms, the masked guards, and the twisted games themselves, quickly embedded the pop culture. Due to its massive success, it wasn’t a surprise when Netflix announced that the series would return for another season. There are various rumors about who among the characters will return and at least four have been confirmed.

Dong-Hyuk told Entertainment Weekly that Lee Jung-jae will reprise his role as Gi-hun in the upcoming season. Aside from him, Lee Byung-hun will also return as Front Man, Wi Ha-jun as Detective Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo as the recruiter. Yoo only had brief appearances in the first season and the director teased that the Guardian: The Lonely and Great God actor could have a longer screen time in the second season. “You’re going to get to see some characters who were just fleeting characters or made very brief appearances in season 1 that actually carry a lot of weight and play an important role in season 2,” Dong-Hyuk said.
Jung-jae had also spoken about his role in Squid Game Season 2. Based on the trailer, Gi-hun will return as a contestant in the deadly game even after winning the previous tournament. However, the actor teased that fans would see a different side of the character because, this time, he participated in the game not to win but to come after those behind the fatal contest. “When I was reading the scripts, that was at the top of mind for me,” Jung-jae explained. “That was what I wanted to find out and was most curious about — how far will Gi-hun be able to make it in the games? And when will he be eliminated, if ever? And if he’s eliminated, will he really die? There are so many twists and turns.” The actor added that even if Gi-hun had experienced the competition before, he didn’t really have an advantage over the other contestants because most of the games were new. However, it will still feature simple games that children in Korea are familiar with growing up. “I remember being on set and being reminded of my childhood days,” Jung-jae added. Of course, fans can expect Squid Game to add deadly twists to those supposedly harmless games.
Squid Game Season 2 is one of the most anticipated series on Netflix, with millions of subscribers waiting for its release. The return of the Front Man, Detective Hwang and the recruiter promises an enriched storyline. For instance, many are wondering how the Front Man ended up with the role, what pushed him to join and lead the deadly games, and what his relationship with the creators behind them was. His motive as to why he remains in the game is still unclear, and many want an answer. Detective Hwang’s storyline is among the plot twists fans have been waiting for. He infiltrated the island to find his missing brother, only to find out that it was the Front Man. However, the Front Man shot him. The audience wants to dig deeper into their family dynamics. Are the brothers really close? What’s the Front Man’s reason for shooting his brother? Did he really want to kill his younger sibling, or did he shoot him to protect him? And will the detective expose the deadly game?
Additionally, all players encounter the recruiter (Gong Yoo). He lures them to join the competition by promising them a life-changing cash prize. However, there are still a lot of unanswered questions about the character. What’s his actual role in the organization? How does he select the player, and will he be part of Gi-hun’s plans in Season 2? All of these mysteries are among the things that fans are eager to find answers to in the upcoming season.
Squid Game Season 2 premieres on December 26, 2024.
