Sony has sold a grand total of 65.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide. Since its initial release in November 2020, the PlayStation 5 has seen continued success, continuing the legacy cemented by previous iterations of Sony’s home video game console.
Announced in 2019 and launched in 2020, the PS5 instantly wowed players with its impressive graphics, unique DualSense controller, and improved performance over its predecessor. Despite having relatively few games at launch, the ones made available became fast favorites for large portions of the community, including the preinstalled platformer Astro’s Playroom and the action-adventure title Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Four years after the console’s release, Sony is giving an update on how well the PS5 is performing, and the results are somewhat unsurprising.

As of March 2023, the PS Plus subscription service had over 47.4 million members.
On November 7, Sony released the PlayStation 5 Pro, which features an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing capabilities, and AI-driven upscaling to support higher fidelity graphics and smoother frame rates. Along with many PS5 titles being enhanced for the new console, the system will also support PS5 Pro Game Boost, which will improve the performance and graphics of over 8,500 backward compatible titles from the previous generation. Recent rumors imply that the PlayStation 6 will be released in 2028, though no word on the company’s next console has officially been announced.
