The Netflixhorror movie Time Cut is a charming look at what happens when a teenager travels back to 2003 and attempts to halt her sister’s murder. Even if audiences are unsure about the time travel trope at the heart of the story, they will likely enjoy the movie by the time they get to the ending of Time Cut. It is both creepy and endearing and has well-written characters that audiences can sympathize with and understand.

Besides celebrating the pure entertainment value of Time Cut, eagle-eyed viewers might notice something else: the villain has played this type of character before. And they also appeared on another popular Netflix project.

M. Night Shyamalan is the master of the horror movie twist, but I have some problems with the villain in one of his films.

Which Time Cut Actor Has Played A Villain Before?

Antonia Gentry and Madison Bailey in Time Cut

Griffin Gluck played Quinn, the killer revealed at Time Cut’s end. The actor also played Gabe on the teen drama Locke & Key. Although Dodge is the main villain on Locke & Key, which has many memorable scenes and creepy moments, Gabe is one of Dodge’s personas.

Both Quinn and Gabe are smart characters who seem innocent at first, and Gluck does a good job portraying both of them. Quinn is good friends with Summer (Antonia Gentry) in 2003, and he is a dorky kid who doesn’t fit in with the crowd. Although he’s sad about that, he has a crush on Summer, and she makes him feel more seen. The big reveal in Time Cut is complex and compelling and adds some layers to Quinn’s character. Future Quinn travels back in time to 2003 to go on a killing spree and get even with Summer for rejecting him. Audiences can sympathize with the kind-hearted and intelligent 2003 Quinn while hating Future Quinn.

Gabe and Quinn appear to have a few things in common, at least at first. Gabe seems just as caring as Quinn, but of course, there is more to the story. Dodge pretends to be a high school student named Gabe in order to befriend Kinsey Locke (Emilia Jones).

While the magical keys may be the focal point of Locke and Key, the show succeeds because of its engaging characters, including the mysterious Gabe. And the same thing is true of Time Cut. What seems like a straightforward time travel movie is really about Lucy and Summer’s growing relationship. Thanks to their solid characters, Locke and Key and Time Cut would function as great dramas even without the horror and supernatural aspects. However, Gluck’s villains elevate the stories and make them more interesting.

What Griffin Gluck Said About Playing A Villain

The Sweetly Slasher in Time Cut

Fans can guess that if an actor plays a villain more than once, they enjoy portraying a darker character with a lot of secrets. That is the case with Gluck. In 2021, the actor gave an interview to Sci-Fi Vision and mentioned how much he enjoys playing this kind of role. Gluck said:

“we’ve talked a lot about how fun it is to play an evil character. It’s something you don’t get to do often. It’s out of the realm of the ordinary, which I think is a lot of fun. For an actor, it’s a real challenge, which, I’ve always enjoyed a thing that’s a little bit out of my comfort zone, because there’s no growth in the comfort zone, and there’s no comfort in the growth zone.”

Even though Gluck has played a villain twice, it’s important to note that both characters are very different. Future Quinn fits into the category of a slasher villain and Gabe in Locke and Key is a shapeshifting supernatural figure. It would be boring if Gluck played the same character twice. Instead, he has proven that he has some dramatic range.

What Other Roles Has Griffin Gluck Played?

  • Mason Warner on Private Practice (2011-2013)
  • Danny Gannon on Back in the Game (2013-2014)
  • Charlie on Red Band Society (2014-2015)
  • Sam Ecklund in American Vandal (2017-2018)
  • Jack Dunkleman in Tall Girl (2019) and Tall Girl 2 (2022)
  • Luke Chambers on Cruel Summer (2022)

Gluck has played some other notable roles, and he has starred in several TV series that are aimed at teenage audiences. Besides his two Netflix villain characters, Gluck played Luke Chambers in season 2 of the teen thriller series Cruel Summer. Seasons 1 and 2 of Cruel Summer are told in three timelines and feature high school characters swept up in a brutal and addictive mystery. Luke may not be a particularly likable character and he may not always do the right thing, but he’s not evil. Gluck also appeared in the 2024 movie The Real Bros of Simi Valley: The Movie.
