MultiVersus’ Roster is Leaving One Character Type in the Dust

MultiVersus’ Roster is Leaving One Character Type in the Dust

When MultiVersus was first announced all the way back in November 2021, it seemed like a pretty promising concept. While Super Smash Bros. Ultimate set the platform-fighter bar exceptionally high, MultiVersus seemed well-equipped to give it a run for its money. After all, Warner Bros. was home to some strong IP, and that’s half the battle for a game that revolves around crossovers.

MultiVersus‘ initial roster was fairly impressive, with some DC icons, classic Looney Tunes characters, Cartoon Network favorites, and a few wildcards thrown in for good measure. MultiVersus has continued to build on that roster since its return earlier this year, adding long-requested Warner Bros. characters like the Joker, Jason Voorhees, Agent Smith, Beetlejuice, Samurai Jack, and the Powerpuff Girls. But with so many great fighters on the roster, one character now stands out like a sore thumb.

MultiVersus Seems To Have Forgotten About One Type of Fighter

There’s Only One Original Character in MultiVersus

When MultiVersus first launched its public Beta, its roster included an original character called Reindog. According to Reindog’s official bio on MultiVersus‘ website, the character was a Royal Guardian of the monarchy on his homeworld of Zanifeer. Reindog wields a powerful gem that grants him special supportive abilities during battle.

As far as fighting game backstories go, Reindog’s is fairly weak, given that their official description is the only bit of information available at the time of writing. When their origin is paired with the character’s rather generic but visual design and moveset, Reindog quickly falls into the background of MultiVersus‘ roster, letting the game’s pop culture icons overshadow them. As of now, Reindog is the only original character on MultiVersus‘ roster, and there don’t seem to be any signs of that changing anytime soon.

MultiVersus Might Be Right to Avoid Original Characters

But while Reindog now seems out of place on MultiVersus‘ roster, developer Player First Games is arguably making the right decision by not adding any more original characters to the game. MultiVersus has always marketed itself as a crossover fighter first and foremost, and so it’s only natural that fans would prefer to see pre-established characters come to the game over new creations. If MultiVersus wants to stand any chance of continuing to compete with the likes of Smash Bros. and Brawlhalla, then it needs to cater to those desires.

According to SteamDB, MultiVersus has a 24-hour peak player count of just 1,741, which is a far cry from the game’s all-time peak of 153,433 in July 2022. Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO David Zaslav has also just confirmed that MultiVersus has underperformed severely, leading to a $100 million hit to the company’s revenue.

At the same time this information hit the internet, MultiVersus announced its next season of content. MultiVersus Season 4 will add Adventure Time‘s Marceline and Teen Titans‘ Raven to the platform-fighter, two of the most frequently requested characters since the game’s launch. With MultiVersus apparently underperforming, it’s definitely the right choice for Player First to focus on delivering long-requested fighters as opposed to original characters like Reindog.
