Key Takeaways
- Magic: The Gathering’s The One Ring card has been steadily dropping in price, possibly due to its popularity.
- The One Ring was worth around £55 – £58 less than a month ago, but has now dropped to a little over £47, with other vairants showing similar drops.
- One of the main theories behind the drops is the card potentially being banned in Modern on December 16 later this year.
Magic: The Gathering’s famous The One Ring has become one of Modern’s most popular cards, ever since it’s introduction back when The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set launched in June last year. If you’re playing someone in Modern, chances are you’ll see The One Ring enter play at some point, as it’s a staple in a lot of decks, though that same popularity seems to have caused the card to drop rather dramatically in price.
First spotted by Wargamer, if you head over to CardMarket, you’ll be able to see that The One Ring was worth around £55 – £58 mark rather consistently throughout the first half of October, with the occasional dip here and there. Less than a month later, the standard One Ring card now sits at a value of a little over £47. It’s the same with other variants too, as V.2 of The One Ring was also worth around £55 in mid-October, but has steadily decreased in value to around £41.
MTG’s The One Ring Card Could Be Banned In Modern
All kinds of outside factors can affect the second-hand value of an MTG card, such as the recent controversial bans on Dockside Extortionist and others, which may have convinced some to start cashing in on high value cards. Another could be Wizards of the Coast recently explaining that reprints of The One Ring are possible in the future, something which was thought impossible due to potential licensing issues.
However, one of the more likely reasons for such a drop is The One Ring’s popularity in Modern. If a card sees far too much usage in a certain format, chances are that Wizards of the Coast will need to do something about it to avoid it being a necessity to be competitive, and chances of The One Ring ending up on the ban list are relatively high as a result.
We know that the next wave of bans in Modern will be revealed on December 16 later this year, so the sharp drop in price is most likely a result of fans cashing in on their cards before the ban hits and their value drops off a cliff. We saw something similar happen with Dockside Extortionist and Jeweled Lotus in the recent Commander bans, which both fell in value by a whopping 79 and 82 percent respectively. Cashing in now simply seems like the sensible thing to do.
