Mixing Fallout with FTL, newly launched Steam strategy game is a real hidden gem

The Crimson Caravan and the Gun Runners may rule the business world of Fallout, but do you ever wonder where they get all their stock? Likewise, who’s keeping Megaton’s saloon in Nuka Cola and iguanas on sticks? And where did Shady Sands get all its brahmin? You meet the occasional trader in the wasteland, but their inventories are pretty small. There must be some kind of wholesaler. Enter Dustland Delivery. A combination of Industry Giant, FTL Faster Than Light, and the post-nuclear deserts of Fallout New Vegas, it’s just hit 1.0 and deserves your attention.

The civilized world is dead. Food, water, and medical supplies are sparse, and there are monsters and zombies everywhere. But humanity clings on – hiding behind concrete fortifications and makeshift militias, the final vestiges of our species are battling for survival. And you know what that means, right? Profit. In Dustland Delivery, your goal is to create, manage, and maximize the biggest and best trading empire in the entire wasteland. Aesthetically, this is a survival game. But the mechanics are pure strategy.

It begins with a humble truck. Your mobile base is the center of your monopoly, and you can customize it with engine upgrades, plate armor, and lethal defense systems. Every supply drop could mean potential death. Random events like monster and raider attacks can throw your plans into disarray, and without proper preparation you’ll be dead before you can say ‘fury road.’ This is where everything gets a bit FTL. As well as maintaining the components and systems on your truck, you also need to recruit and manage staff. Every potential hire comes with different traits and attributes. It’s all about choosing the right wastrel for the job – and trying not to get too emotionally attached.

If the weather turns bad or you think there’s danger ahead, you can pull over, set up camp, and wait until daybreak. The world of Dustland Delivery is gigantic, with six warring factions all vying for your business. Do you try to pal up with everyone, or pick a side and corner the market? Gradually, you can establish your own settlements. Over time, they evolve into full-grown cities. Naturally, though, that means extra work, as you have to supply your would-be subjects with the resources they need to build.

After a period in early access, Dustland Delivery has just hit its full 1.0 launch. A unique take on the strategy genre, it mixes in-depth simulation game mechanics with a wonderfully brutal post-apocalyptic style. If you want to try it for yourself, just head here.
