While many Star Wars films are in development over at Lucasfilm it’s been five years since one was released on the big screen. That hasn’t stopped Disney from trying its hand at three more Star Wars movies.
Star Wars saw a resurgence after Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012. The company started its acquisition with a new trilogy of Star Wars films, continuing the story of George Lucas’ original trilogy that ended in 1983. It also commissioned a pair of standalone movies, the Han Solo origin tale Solo: A Star Wars Story, and the Episode IV prequel, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Since then, Star Wars content has been kept to Disney+ with three seasons of The Mandalorian, a new season of The Clone Wars, and one season each for Andor, The Acolyte, and Obi-Wan Kenobi debuting on the platform since 2019.

Disney remains committed to big-screen Star Wars releases, however, with the latest news revealing the company has commissioned a new trilogy of films set in the galaxy far, far away. Deadline reported the news that Simon Kinberg is attached to write and produce all three films in the trilogy, with Kathleen Kennedy also producing for Lucasfilm. Kinberg is known best for his work on the X-Men franchise and served as a writer on X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix. He also helped to write and develop the TV series Invasion and The Twilight Zone reboot. Kinberg also has extensive producing credits on films and series, including Deadpool & Wolverine, Death on the Nile, Legion, Designated Survivor, and The Martian. Perhaps most relevant is Kinberg’s work on Star Wars Rebels, which he executive produced alongside Star Wars guru Dave Filoni.
Will the New Star Wars Trilogy Be Part of the Skywalker Saga?
The plot of the new Star Wars trilogy remains shrouded in mystery. Deadline reported the films would be Episodes 10-12 of the Skywalker Saga, which would continue the story after Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. However, other outlets have disputed this information, reporting that Kingberg’s trilogy will not be connected to the Skywalker Saga and is instead intended to be the launch of a new story in the Star Wars universe, although that wouldn’t omit familiar characters from making an appearance.
Disney already has a few Star Wars films in development and many more that never eventuated. On the docket right now is The Mandalorian & Grogu which is set for release in 2026, James Mangold’s film about the dawn of the Jedi, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s sequel featuring Daisy Ridley’s Rey, Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian film, and an untitled Star Wars project from Taika Waititi. Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron film also remains in a state of flux. Some of the Star Wars projects that never moved forward included new trilogies from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and a separate trilogy from The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson. With those Star Wars sagas never panning out, perhaps Kinberg is the next in a line of creatives that Lucasfilm is pinning its Star Wars trilogy hopes on.
