Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Should You Knock Out or Reason With The First Warden?
The First Warden proves a tough ally to recruit for Rook in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, so players have a choice with how best to deal with him.
How To Find The Warden Vault
Players will need to enlist the help of Rook’s incoming companion, Taash, in order to open the Warden Vault. Thankfully, you won’t be able to miss the opportunity to recruit her, as the Warden Vault is found on the Rivian Coast, at the same location where players first encounter Taash. It is recommended you follow through and complete the initial quest with her, as her abilities as a companion will make it far easier to open the vault.
From the fast-travel point in the north-eastern corner of the map (as indicated above), players will find themselves in front of an iron gate. If you have been behind it already and opened it, then you can easily progress to the vault. However, if this is your first visit, you should venture along the path to the right of the gate until you find a red vase in front of a stone wall. Use Taash’s fire breath to blow up this vase and continue through the hole in the wall it created.
Once through the wall, continue to the other side of the clearing and head up the stairs. On the next floor, you’ll come across a closed door on the right that you can walk through. From there, go down the ladder and take the stairs immediately to the right that go down. You’ll need to defeat an enemy blocking the entrance, as well as using Taash’s fire breath to melt the Blistering Drakestone in the archway. Once clear, simply follow the path downstairs until you find the entrance to the Warden Vault.
How To Open The First Warden Vault Lock
To open the Warden Vault, players will need to open three locks throughout the island. The first of which is relatively easy to find and requires only that you retrace your steps. To find it, players should go back the way they came, until they get to the wall that Taash blew up. You can go the reverse direction to where you came, or you can go back up the previous ladder and pull the lever to open the gate. This will give you access to the fast travel point and make it a little easier to get to the first lock solution.
From the hole in the wall, take a left (instead of going straight to the stairs) and into the next room, which is full of crates and other wooden objects. Use Rook’s attacks or rolling ability to break all of the wood and reveal the wall with three shields on it. You will need to light the three shields by interacting with them to open the first lock. To unlock the first Warden Vault lock, interact with the shields in this order: left, middle, then right.
Once all three shields are lit, head back up the stairs and through the door. On the opposite side of the platform (where the lever is), you’ll find another small gate next to the same three shield symbols. Now that you have completed the puzzle, all the shields here will be lit as well, allowing you to pull the lever to raise the gate. This will grant you access to the room, where you will find a chest, some Imperial Weave, and the lever to unlock the first Warden Vault lock.
How To Unlock The Second Warden Vault Lock
For the second Warden Vault lock, players will need to find and follow a spirit to various locations. To find the spirit initially, head down the ladder to the main clearing again, then venture straight ahead and walk through the door on the far right. If this is your first time going this way, you will need to deal with a few enemies first. Once through the door, you’ll come to a small courtyard where you’ll find the remains of a body with green butterflies around it. Approach the body and interact with it, and the spirit will appear, before floating through the wall.
To find the second skeleton location, go back to the hole in the wall and head up the stairs again. Instead of taking a left to go into the building, turn right and round the corner. You’ll find the second body in the corner, which you will need to get close to the skeleton to move the spirit.
For the third skeleton, simply head back down the stairs and through the hole in the wall. In the next room, you’ll find the body tucked in the corner. This will encourage the spirit to move on again, towards the final body.
To get to the final body, go through the large gate (or back up the stairs and into the main room), and go back towards the door where the first body was. As you enter the room, you’ll notice a significant green glow, where you will find the spirit standing there. Walk up to the spirit and it will disappear, revealing a hidden door containing the lever to the second Warden Vault lock.
How To Unlock The Third Warden Vault Lock
From the second lock’s lever, players should head to the left exit and through the courtyard where the first body is, in order to start the process of opening the third lock. Continue through the courtyard, take the left door, through the door on the right, then across the room and through the door next to the painting.
Follow the path down the stairs until you reach a well-lit clearing, where you will need to take the door on the right, the right again. Through here, you’ll find a training dummy in the middle of the room, as well as a doorway blocked by Drakestone. Use Taash to free up this doorway, then continue through until you find the locked door and the body. Rook will comment that they need a Wisp to animate the skeleton.
To get the Wisp, retrace your steps and take a right to go outside. There is a huge statue where some enemies are patrolling, but you can miss them if you wish. As you get outside, look to the right and up, where you will find a red explosive vase. Use Taash to blow this up, then climb the ladder on the left. On the opposite side of the platform, you’ll find the Wisp. Simply get close enough for it to follow you, then lead it back to the skeleton. Once there, the Wisp will take it over and pull the lever for you. Through the door is a Memento, a chest, and the lever for the third Warden Vault lock. Once opened, you can go back to the vault and claim its contents.
Warden Vault Rewards
Once players make it back to the vault, they will be able to pass through the doors to discover its contents. Upon opening the door, the quest will be completed, which will grant you 500 XP, an increase in bond strength with the two companions you have with you, as well as a +50 boost to Grey Wardens strength, as well as a +100 boost for Lords of Fortune. Inside the room will be three chests.
