How To Beat Fishscale Island In Ys X: Nordics

Ys X: Nordics takes you on a journey through the seas where you’ll come across many islands that you will have to explore and free from the undead. Some of these islands are fairly small, and you will likely go there only once, so you have to take the most out of your trip.

Combat is at the heart of Ys X: Nordics, and it’s important to understand it properly if you want to have a chance at beating the game.

You will have to head to Fishscale Island as part of the main story in Chapter 3. The island is fairly small and is one of the first islands you may come across after setting out from Balta Island on the Sandras as you officially begin your journey.

How To Reach Fishscale Island

The image shows Fishscale Island's location on the map in Ys X: Nordics.

Fishscale Island is situated towards the west of Balta Island. Reaching the island is fairly easy as you can ride the wind to get to the island as fast as possible. If you choose not to ride the wind and travel in the open sea, it may take a while to reach Fishscale Island, because, by this point, you likely wouldn’t have upgraded your ship.

As you approach Fishscale Island, you will notice several rocks that can be targeted by the Sandras and destroyed using artillery. You don’t have to destroy these rocks to progress the story. Once you’re close enough, you’ll be able to disembark on the island.

Progressing the quest on Fishscale Island will lock you out from the open sea exploration for a while, so if you want to take care of any small quests or tasks, it is best to do it before heading to Fishscale Island.

Once you’ve disembarked on the island, you’ll quickly notice the shipwreck to your right. Approach it, and you’ll be able to interact with it. After interacting with the shipwreck, Adol and Karja discover a note on the broken mast that states that the writer of the note has been cursed and urges the duo to leave the island.

Adol would be thrilled at the prospect and would want to investigate more. As you move away from the shipwreck, and head into the island, you will notice a Hewnstone that is surrounded by black miasma.

The image shows that Adol is about to purify the black miasma-covered Hewnstone in Ys X: Nordics.

Approaching the Hewnstone will unlock a sequence, which will allow Adol to discover that he might be able to purify the Hewnstone. After the sequence, you will have to approach the Hewnstone and press and hold the interact button to purify it.

Once you’ve purified it, you’ll be able to use it like any other Hewnstone you’ve encountered so far, and will receive the following items:

  • Mana Point (Adol)
  • Mana Point (Karja)
  • Additionally, you will be able to refine new types of Mana Seeds.

After interacting with the Hewnstone, you can head straight ahead and follow the trail of small Mana Crystals. You’ll notice the path diverges into two, with one leading straight ahead with the quest marker, and the other to the right.

The image shows the contents of the chest on Fishscale Island in Ys X: Nordics.

If you go to the right, you’ll notice a huge stone ahead of a short trail of small Mana Crystals leading up to it. Circling around the stone will allow you to find a chest that includes three Red Drops, which can be used to craft Mana Seeds at a Hewnstone later on.

Heading to the north from the chest will allow you to come across a huge Mana Crystal, which can be attacked to gain several Mana Crystals. After doing all that, you can head straight ahead for the quest marker, where you will encounter a large humanoid Griegr who is wearing something like a tribal mask, and will have to fight it head-on.

How To Defeat Tribal Mask Griegr On Fishscale Island

While it isn’t an official boss fight, the sole enemy you encounter on the Fishscale Island is a Griegr that features an armored health bar and might give you a little trouble if you’re playing on a higher difficulty. Despite that, the Griegr’s moves are fairly easy to deal with.

Attacks

Description

How To Avoid

Swipes

The Griegr will swing its claws around to attack Adol and Karja.

If you do a perfect parry, the Griegr will get stunned. Otherwise, if you keep blocking, the Griegr might swing its claws around a couple of times.

Giant Hug Attack

The enemy will glow red and open both of its arms wide as it attempts to grab you.

As this is one of those attacks that can’t be blocked normally, you will either have to create some distance from the enemy or try to attempt a perfect parry.

Jumping Swipe

The Griegr will jump into the air, and perform a frontal swipe as it lands.

This attack is fairly easy to see and has an incredibly short range. Just holding the block button works fine as it doesn’t deal a considerable amount of damage if you’re blocking.

Screech Attack

The enemy will screech, pushing Adol and Karja away from it, while also dealing some damage.

If you’re holding the block button, you’ll be able to neglect most of the damage from this attack.

Glowing Screech

When this enemy is on low health, its face will start glowing, and it will unleash a screech that will push you away while dealing damage. It will also grant full armor to the Griegr.

There’s not much you can do about this attack, so you’ll have to break down its armor again.

If you keep using Duo Skills and block all of its moves consistently, you’ll be able to defeat it in no time. After you’ve defeated the Griegr, Karja will ask Adol to try and purify it like he purified Dogi during the Rite of Shield Brotherhood.

As Adol attempts to purify the Griegr, it will be revealed that the Griegr is Joel, Mirabel’s father. Joel will then depart with Adol and Karja on the Sandras.

The image shows that Grenn is telling Joel that his daughter, Mirabel, was also one of the victims of the Carnac Incident in Ys X: Nordics.

Joel and the duo will discuss how he ended up on the island, and Joel will reveal that he wasn’t aware of the calamity that befell Carnac and was out on the sea on his fishing boat when it happened. Joel also mentions that he encountered Jord, a female Griegr, while he was in the sea and was turned into a Griegr by her.

As Joel offers to join Adol and Karja’s crew, Sandras is attacked by a Griegr fleet, led by a powerful undead named Odr. After a lengthy cutscene, you’ll be fighting against Odr.

Fighting Against Odr

The image shows Odr, a humanoid Greigr, during his first encounter against Adol and Karja on Fishscale Island in Ys X: Nordics.

The Boss fight against Odr can be very challenging, but you’re not meant to win here. Once the fight begins, you’ll quickly notice that Odr is far stronger than any foe you’ve faced yet, as simply breaking his armor is enough of a challenge.

If you’re too close to breaking his armor, Odr will unleash a charged attack that can wipe you out in one hit. Once you’re defeated during the battle against Odr, he will praise Karja’s potential and place a curse on Adol that will force him to die in three months, unless the duo kills Odr first. He invites the two main characters to become strong enough to kill him in a limited time.

The image shows Odr asking Adol and Karja to end his life after becoming stronger in Ys X: Nordics.

From there, Odr will leave and Karja will be forced to make an important decision. As Karja makes her decision to traverse through the Tyrant to escape the Griegr Fleet, the crew will end up on Termina Island, which will be the next stop of the duo’s journey.
