FF16 and FF7 Rebirth’s Recent Releases Likely Put the Series on the Back Burner

For the time being, Final Fantasy may be on the back burner simply because of the recent releases of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PS5 and Final Fantasy 16 on PC. Final Fantasy 16 has been out for over a year now, but its very recent port to PC still makes it somewhat of a new release. Both games have also done fairly well, so there’s little need for Square Enix to push anything else out too quickly.

At the moment, there is no confirmed information about when Final Fantasy 17 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, the next two anticipated Final Fantasy titles, might arrive, only predictions and theories based on release patterns. If all does go according to Final Fantasy‘s more recent release patterns, it’s likely Final Fantasy 17 won’t launch until at least 2026 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 until at least 2028. Needless to say, fans likely have some time before they see the next big Final Fantasy game.

However, Square Enix revealed last year that there were no plans for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth DLC. It’s possible that the developer simply wants Part 3 to arrive in time for Final Fantasy 7‘s 30th anniversary in 2027 and attempting to put out DLC for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth could slow those plans down.

Finally, Final Fantasy 16 could potentially receive another DLC pack as well. The developer confirmed earlier this year that it wasn’t ruling out the possibility of Final Fantasy 16 getting a third DLC after Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide, but it also said the possibility of that happening was “not zero,” which doesn’t give much hope. Even so, it’s still possible, especially after the game’s somewhat successful PC launch.


Final Fantasy may be on the back burner for the time being, but it can still exit 2024 with a bang if it plays its cards right. With Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth potentially heading to the Game Awards and Final Fantasy 16 back in the spotlight after its PC launch, anything is possible for the series with what it has left of 2024.
