Sega Is Delisting More Than 60 Games From Digital Storefronts

Key Takeaways

  • Sega has announced it will be delisting more than 60 of its games on December 6, 2024.
  • Among the games affected are Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and the Sega Genesis Classics Collection.
  • Sega has not explained why the games are being delisted.

From Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth to Sonic x Shadow Generations and everything in between, Sega’s 2024 has been one of the studio’s best years in recent memory. However, the company has announced a curious decision to close out the year, confirming that it will be removing more than 60 of its games from digital storefronts across consoles and PC on December 6, 2024.

Sega revealed the mass delisting via an FAQ page for its Sega Genesis Classics collection. Sega Genesis Classics is – you guessed it – a collection of classic games that were originally released on the Sega Genesis with the likes of Ecco The Dolphin, the original Sonic games, and Golden Axe among its many titles. The collection was first released in 2010 but will no longer be available to buy from digital storefronts from December 6, 2024.

Yakuza fans have been training hard for this moment.

The collection will no longer be available to buy through PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo’s online stores from the date above, and it will also disappear from Steam. Xbox and Steam’s stores will be the ones that are affected most by the delisting as some of the games included in the collection are available to buy individually on the platforms. Those games, so the likes of Ristar, Columns, and Altered Beast, will be delisted on December 6 too. Sega has assured NSO subscribers its Genesis library will be unaffected.

If you already own any of the games being delisted on any of the platforms mentioned, you have nothing to worry about. They will remain playable after December 6.

Even more curious is the announced removal of Sega games that are not a part of the Genesis Classics Collection that will be a part of this delisting. Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and Sega Bass Fishing will all be disappearing from Steam too. Worth noting that not only are those three and others mentioned Sega Dreamcast games, but they are all included in the Dreamcast Collection you can currently buy on Steam which will be delisted along with most of its original games next month.

Even though there are a lot of Sonic games included in both of the delisted bundles, not many of them are mentioned in the delisting. The original four Sonic games nor the Sonic Adventure games are included in the list of titles being removed from storefronts.

As for why Sega has decided to do this, that’s currently a mystery. We know that Sega is actively working on modern versions of classic games like Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio, and perhaps this means there’s an announcement coming regarding when exactly those games will be released, potentially at The Game Awards which take place one week after the games are delisted. The mass delisting could also be pre-empting new collections for the Genesis and Dreamcast.
