You’ll need to follow a series of cryptic clues to bypass two security locks and save your friends. If you’re struggling to find your way through Lottacoins Island, here are all of the clues and the solutions.

This guide also includes the solution to the side quest More Than One Code, which you’ll unlock after reconnecting Lottacoins Island’s Lighthouse.

Code For The Upper Floors

The first number code puzzle on Lottacoin Island in Mario & Luigi: Borthership.

Once you enter the main building on Lottacoins Island you’ll find that the stairs leading to the upper floors are locked. Before you can explore any further you need to enter the correct code.

There’s a room in the back right side of the lobby that has four Number Blocks and a switch. Once you’ve entered the correct code into the four number blocks, hitting the switch will open the stairs and let you explore further into the building.

There are three clues you’ll need to find in order to solve this puzzle. The first clue is given to you by a receptionist at a desk in the lobby. Walk all the way to the left and talk to the pink character behind the desk, closest to the Save Block.

She will provide a clue to the first number block. She shows you a sketch of a fern sitting on a table. The fern has five leaves, thus, the number on the first block is five.

Before leaving the lobby, talk to the blue character standing near the front staircase. He will inform you that he’s left a clue on the work table in the communication room.

If you don’t speak to this character the clue will not appear.

After talking to him, walk up the stairs at the front of the lobby, go through the door on the right, and cross the bridge into the communication room.

Both of the clues we’re looking for are in this room. If you spoke to the blue character at the bottom of the stairs, you should see a glowing object near the desk. Interact with it to receive the clue for the third block. This clue depicts a sketch of cabinet doors and pencil cups with a plus sign between them.

All you need to do is look around the room and count the number of cabinet doors on the shelf (six) and the number of pencil cups on the desks (two) and add them together. The number on the third block is eight.

Finally, interact with the radio on the blue table in the back right corner and the minion will give you this clue:

Second from left: 3

On far right: 7

This clue is the most straightforward. The number on the first block is three, and the number on the fourth block is seven.

Leave the communication room, cross the bridge, go down the stairs, and enter the room in the back-right of the lobby where the blocks are.

Change the numbers on the blocks so that they read 5-3-8-7. Hit the switch, and the staircase to the upper floor will be unlocked.

Code To Free The Prisoners

Mario and Luigi talking to prisoners on Lottacoin Island in Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

Once you’ve reunited Mario & Luigi, you’ll be faced with another set of number blocks and a switch. This time you’ll be given all the clues up front before you set off to explore the building to find the solutions. To get the clues simply walk up to the prisoners, who are trapped in the room to the right of the new number blocks.

You’ll have a slightly different path getting here if you sent Princess Peach on the reconnaissance mission instead of Luigi. As long as Mario & Luigi are together you will be able to solve this puzzle.

There are four clues corresponding to the four number blocks.

  • The first clue is a picture of two security cameras and a triangle.
  • The second clue is five trees with a gap between the fourth and fifth tree, as well as an arrow pointing down at the third and fifth.
  • The third clue depicts four pillars and an instruction to add the first two, subtract the third, and then add the fourth pillar.
  • Finally, the fourth clue depicts a security camera pointing at four squares in a d-pad configuration, with the bottom square shaded in.

The solution to the first puzzle is in the very same room as the number blocks. If you interact with the cameras on the wall in the back left and back right corners of the room, you’ll see, from the perspective of the security camera, a collection of stars, triangles, circles, and Xs.

Your goal is to add up the total number of triangles shown on both cameras. The camera on the left shows four triangles while the camera on the right shows two triangles. The number you should enter in the first number box is six.

When you leave this room after gathering the clues, the IDLE kids will appear and offer to help you search for the solutions. If you talk to them whenever you see them throughout the build they will help guide you towards the answers.

Go through the door on the opposite end of the walkway from the room with the number blocks in it and you’ll find the trees depicted in the second clue lined up along the righthand wall.

There are four trees before the door and one tree after, which is why there’s a slight gap between the fourth and fifth trees in the clue. The clue shows an arrow pointing at the third and fifth trees, so interact with both of them to receive this message:

Tree #3: Less than 6

Tree #5: Greater than 4

With those two clues in mind, you can deduce that the second number block is five.

The next two solutions can be found on the floor below. Head towards the second-floor connection bridge (the one directly below the connecting bridge that’s broken in the middle) and you’ll find four pillars labeled ‘6 4 9 1’.

The third clue, which depicts these four pillars, says to add the first two numbers, subtract the third, and add the fourth. 6 + 4 = 10 – 9 = 1 + 1 = 2. The third number block is two.

Four pillars that read 6-4-9-1 in Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

For the final clue, go into the room to the left of the second-floor walkway and head to the far front-left corner where you’ll find a security camera. Interact with the camera, and you’ll see four numbers arranged in the same d-pad configuration as the original clue.

Since the button number is shaded in the clue, we want the bottom number in this diagram. The fourth number block is nine.

A security camera pointing at the numbers 7,3,1, and 9, with 9 in the bottom quadrant in Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

Put it all together, and the solution to this puzzle is 6-5-2-9.

Return to the number block room on the top floor, across the broken walkway, and input this code into the four number blocks, making sure to hit the red blocks with Mario and the green blocks with Luigi. Once the code has been entered, hit the switch to unlock the gate and free the prisoners.

More Than One Code Sidequest Code

Yellow guy lurking outside of a bulding as Mario and Luigi approach in Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

Sometime after completing Lottacoins Island and relinking its lighthouse, you’ll gain access to the More Than One Code sidequest. You can begin this quest by returning to Lottacoins Island and talking to the yellow boy hanging out outside the main building, just to the left.

After you talk to him he will run inside and wait for you near the seating areas on the left side of the lobby. After talking to him again, you’ll be able to interact with each table to gather intel.

Yellow guying telling Mario "We'll get intel on that secret code from these tables." in Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

You’ll need to give the person at the middle table 200 coins to get their clue. Don’t worry, you’ll get these coins back when you complete the quest.

You can talk to the people sitting at each table in any order, but here are the clues they offer, from left to right.

Left table: The secret code has four numbers. If you add them up the total is 23.

Middle table: It starts with a 3. The next three numbers get larger as you go right.

Right table: There are four numbers in the code. And two of them are less than 5.

That’s all the information we need to solve this puzzle. The first number is a three, and the numbers get larger as you go right. We know that two of the numbers are less than five, which means the second number has to be four. If we add those numbers together and subtract them from 23 we get 16.

The last two digits add up to 16, with the last number being higher than the third. The only possible numbers that fit here are seven and nine. Therefore, the code you need to enter is 3-4-7-9.

Head into the room on the right side of the lobby, enter the code, and hit the switch. As a reward for solving the puzzle, you’ll be rewarded with two 1-Up Mushrooms, two Super Syrup Jars, and a Gold Medallion.
