Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is not largely a game about choice, but it does have some moments where Aloy can decide on the fate of characters she meets throughout the game. These choices do come with some consequences, and the first one happens fairly early on in the game.
The decision of whether or not to kill Olin isn’t necessarily cut and dry and will mostly depend on how you decide to play Aloy as a character. There are some changes to the story, depending on whether you choose to save the character in question, so here’s everything you need to know.

All Changes In Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered From Original
Horizon Zero Dawn got remastered for the latest generation of consoles and PC, so let’s discuss the things that changed in this new version.
What Happens When You Kill Olin?
If you decide to kill Olin in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, then he won’t accompany you on the follow-up quest you get to save his family. However, if you choose to spare him, then he will give you some help in rescuing them when the time comes.
So, largely, the choice is really up to you if you want to let him live or not. It doesn’t have any major story consequences, so it’ll be up to what you think Aloy would do in that situation — or what you would personally do in the situation. There are some things to keep in mind, though, that could explain why Aloy would save him.
At the end of the day, Olin is blackmailed by the Eclipse and the very intimidating Helis to carry out orders for the Proving Massacre that happens at the beginning of the game. It’s not a choice he makes for himself, and if you spare him, he swears to change his ways so he can live a better life. There’s also his wife and child to consider, and they’re quite happy to hear that he made it out alive when you save them.
On the other hand, he did betray Ersa and Erend, and he did aid in the destruction of the Nora, which is Aloy’s own tribe. There are arguments both for and against whether he should survive, and there’s no right answer as it’s entirely up to you.
You also still get the ‘Collateral’ quest to save his family if he lives or dies, so you
don’t really miss out on any content
either, if that’s what you’re worried about in the grand scheme.
How To Complete Collateral In Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Once you’ve decided on Olin’s fate in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, you will automatically get the ‘Collateral’ Errand in which Aloy needs to save his family. It’s an optional quest, and you can do it any time before the last major main quest.
To start, you need to travel to a small, unmarked Eclipse outpost southeast of Day’s Height. If you spared Olin, then you can find him here and speak to him before the quest truly starts. You can ask him to come with you or stay behind while you take care of it yourself.
If you want to take a
stealthy approach
, you should leave him behind because he runs in screaming before you can come up with a plan.
Once you’ve spoken to Olin (or not), you need to clear the camp of all Eclipse guards. One of them will have the key — usually the one that’s patrolling near the house — and you need to pick it up and unlock the door. Inside, you’ll find Olin’s wife and child.
They’ll be relieved that you’ve come to rescue them, and you’ll also get a sweet scene with Olin at the end if you decide to spare him. But, with that, you’ve pretty much resolved his storyline in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered.
