Life is Strange: Double Exposure‘s director, Jon Stauder, has responded to the game’s “very interesting” mixed reviews and said he thinks a divisive response is better than a middling one.
Although every Life is Strange game has its fans and the series as a whole is a bit of a critical darling, the same can’t quite be said of its most recent release, Double Exposure. Bringing back Max Caufield was always going to be a tall task considering how important she is to Life is Strange as a whole, and it’s fair to say the final result hasn’t blown everyone away.

As we reported yesterday, Life is Strange: Double Exposure is currently the only game in the series to have “Mixed” reviews on Steam, with players citing the lack of consistently meaningful choices, treatment of Chloe and Max’s relationship, and polarising ending as some of the reasons why they were disappointed.
Life Is Strange: Double Exposure Director Prefers “Strong Reactions”
If you were wondering how Double Exposure developer Deck Nine was taking the unarguably divisive reviews, then wonder no more. GamesRadar+ recently had the chance to talk to the game’s director, Jon Stauder, about the studio’s vision for Max’s latest adventure, which led to a conversation about the reception so far.
When asked about his thoughts on the mixed reaction to Double Exposure so far, Stauder says that it’s better than coming out and being “just really middle of the road”, pointing out that it’s better to have a “strong reaction” to the game rather than none at all. Stauder also says it’s not something he’s been through before, and that it’s “very interesting” to him.
With the reviews, we’ve got some really high highs and a couple of low lows, but I think that’s better than it coming out and being just really middle of the road. Some people are having a strong reaction to it, whether it’s positive or negative, and I find that very interesting. – Jon Stauder
While it seems that Stauder and Deck Nine aren’t too bothered by the negative responses as long as players are actually reacting to the latest game, the director did take the chance to confirm that Deck Nine was always planning on returning to Max Caufield. Stauder says that the team looked at what resonated with fans, and that Max Caufield’s potential as a returning protagonist was “untapped”.
Life is Strange fans are clearly a little split on whether Max’s return was a good thing for the series or not, but there are also plenty that seem to like the new direction and want to see the character return. At the very least, it seems that Deck Nine is more than aware of the response so far and hasn’t let itself be slowed down.
