Borderlands 4 Release Won’t Clash With Grand Theft Auto 6

Borderlands 4 Release Won't Clash With Grand Theft Auto 6

Key Takeaways

  • Borderlands 4 will be released sometime in 2025, and we can now narrow down that window.
  • Borderlands 4 won’t be released before April 2025, but it also won’t clash with Grand Theft Auto 6.
  • This means that Borderlands 4 will either be released in Summer or very late in 2025.

Everyone was surprised to see Borderlands 4 appear at this year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live. The teaser trailer depicts a planet (Pandora?) under attack from something coming from space, and Randy Pitchford has confirmed that it isn’t Handsome Jack like fans initially speculated.

We know that Borderlands 4 will arrive sometime in 2025, but no firm date has been set yet. However, two clues suggest a couple of approximate windows in which it could be released. Take-Two’s earnings release confirms that Borderlands 4 will be released sometime during the company’s fiscal year 2026, which runs from April 2025 to March 2026. So, we know Borderlands 4 won’t arrive before April 2025, but Take-Two’s chief executive officer Strauss Zelnick also gave us another hint in an interview with Variety.

How Close is a Clash?

“I think it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily,” Zelnick said. Grand Theft Auto 6 doesn’t have a firm release date, but the window Rockstar is aiming for is Fall 2025, which generally means September, October or November. Of course, Rockstar hasn’t always been punctual with releases in the past.

Now, we’re not sure how soon the two releases have to be together for Zelnick to consider it a “clash,” but a couple of months seems likely. This means that Borderlands 4 is likely to arrive in the Summer, or just before the holiday season in the Winter. Borderlands has always released in September or October, but you can be almost certain that Grand Theft Auto 6 will dominate the holiday season which means Borderlands 4 is likely to release earlier in the year, like April or May. Of course, there could also be a situation where Grand Theft Auto 6 releases in September and Borderlands 4 in November or December, but that seems less likely.

We still have little information on the setting of Borderlands 4, except that the antagonist is “something far more dangerous” than Handsome Jack. This suggests something more universe-threatening, as we saw in Borderlands 3. For all the personal grievances he inflicted upon the Vault Hunters, Jack was just trying to get into a vault at the end of the day. We may learn more about Borderlands 4 at the upcoming Game Awards, or beyond.
