All of these different facets of Tower of God make it quite challenging to find an anime series that is exactly like it. And truth be told, there’s really nothing like Tower of God out there. So we decided to find anime that has at least some of the combination of what makes Tower of God so interesting. With that out of the way, here are 7 best anime to watch if you like Tower of God.

7 Tomodachi Game

MyAnimeList Score: 7.7/10

The 5 main characters as well Manabu-kun

  • Release Date: Apr 6, 2022
  • Genre: Mystery, Suspense
  • Where to Watch: Crunchyroll

Tomodachi Game can be translated as Friends Game. As the name suggests, this series is about friendship, or to be more precise, it’s about kidnapping a group of friends and forcing them to compete in multiple games where they have to make difficult decisions that could jeopardize their friendship forever. Deception, betrayal, and manipulation are the name of the game.

On the surface, Tomodachi Game seems to be so far away from Tower of God. After all, one of the most important rules of the Tomodachi Game is “No Violence Allowed”, while Tower of God is all about killing people. But when it comes to betraying and manipulating people who are close to you, Tomodachi Game is arguably on par, or even better at it than Tower of God.

6 The God of High School

MyAnimeList Score: 7.0/10

The God Of High School

  • Release Date: Jul 6, 2020
  • Genre: Action, Fantasy
  • Where to Watch: Crunchyroll, Netflix

The God of High School is about a nationwide martial arts tournament for high schoolers. The winner of this tournament will have their wish granted by the organizers, no matter what it is. However, the longer the tournament goes on, the shadier and more complicated it turns out to be.

5 Hunter x Hunter

MyAnimeList Score: 9.0/10

Gon, Killua, Kurapika, Leorio and other characters from Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact game in a serious mood
Credits: Eighting

  • Release Date: Oct 2, 2011
  • Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
  • Where to Watch: Crunchyroll, Netflix

Hunter x Hunter is a story about a boy named Gon who becomes a professional Hunter in order to follow the steps of his long-lost father. The story quickly spirals into other things, such as mafia wars, murderous aliens, and even real-life RPG games on a remote island. But the ones who resemble Tower of God the most are the Hunter Exam arc and the Heavens Arena arc, specifically the Trick Tower in Hunter Exam arc and the Tower Combat Arena in Heavens Arena arc.

Trick Tower is a prison and the location of the third phase of Gon’s Hunter Exam. The Trick Tower forced the contestant to face different kinds of challenges, some of which included fighting and killing, with the sole purpose of getting out of the tower. Likewise, in the Tower Combat Arena, the contestants fight at every level and the winners get to fight at the higher level. The higher the level, the greater the rewards will be. There may not be any betrayal in these two arcs, but there’s undoubtedly a truckload of intense combat and violence there.

4 Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

MyAnimeList Score: 8.0/10

Magi: The Labyrinth Of Magic

  • Release Date: Oct 7, 2012
  • Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
  • Where to Watch: Crunchyroll, Netflix

Another anime that features battles in a tower is Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic. In the world of Magi: Labyrinth of Magic, magical dungeons randomly appear all over the world. Each of these dungeons contains an absurd amount of gold and treasure. But the real reward is the powerful Djin that will serve and bestow its power to the one person that it deems worthy among the people who enter the dungeon.

3 Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?

MyAnimeList Score: 7.5/10

DanMachi: Strongest Familias, Ranked

  • Release Date: Apr 4, 2015
  • Genre: Apr 4, 2015
  • Where to Watch: Crunchyroll, HIDive, Netflix

In Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon, Gods and Goddess are real and they live among humans. Each of these deities has their own loyal followers, also known as Familia—such as Loki Familia or Freya Familia, just to name a few. So as you can see, although there’s a word “dungeon” right there in the title, this series is actually a lot more complicated than that. Just like how Tower of God is more than just a story about the “Tower”.

From close friends to mortal enemies, the relationship between these familias varies depending on the personal relationship of the deities themselves. So apart from the magic spells and the martial arts, there’s also politics and deceptions baked into the story of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon.

2 Made in Abyss

MyAnimeList Score: 8.6/10

Reg, Riko, and Nanachi in Made In Abyss

  • Release Date: Jul 7, 2017
  • Genre: Adventure, Drama, Fantasy, Mystery, Sci-Fi
  • Where to Watch: Crunchyroll, HIDive, Netflix

In the world of Made in Abyss, there’s a colossal pit that leads to approximately 20,000 meters below the surface. The abyss is estimated to have eight layers, each with its own unique ecosystem. Every layer contains valuable treasures called Artifacts. The deeper you go, the more valuable the artifacts will be. However, those who dare to descend into the abyss will be cursed. The deeper they go, the more intense the curse will be. The curse will activate whenever you try to go back up. An ascent from the first layer will cause dizziness and nausea, the fourth layer will cause excruciating pain and severe bleeding all over the body, and the seventh layer will cause instant death.

1 Sword Art Online

MyAnimeList Score: 7.2/10

Sword Art Online

  • Release Date: Jul 8, 2012
  • Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Romance
  • Where to Watch: Crunchyroll, Netflix

Sword Art Online is a story about gamers who are trapped in an online fantasy game called Sword Art Online. This series has numerous story arcs, each different than the others. So just like Hunter x Hunter, only a certain part of Sword Art Online is similar to Tower of God, which is the first arc of the story, the Aincrad arc. Aincrad itself is a massive floating castle and the main setting of the game Sword Art Online.

There are 100 levels in Aincrad, each with its own unique landscapes and challenges. Just like in Tower of God, the only way to advance to the next level is by completing the missions on the current level, or in the case of Sword Art Online, to defeat a powerful monster called the Floor Boss.

The people in Tower of God want the blessing of the Tower while those in Sword Art Online want to get their old life back. One thing’s for sure, they know each day can be their last day. That’s why they are willing to do anything to survive, be it through learning new spells and sword techniques or by deceiving and betraying their friends.

At first glance, these two series may look different, but once you dig deeper, you’ll find quite a lot of similarities between them. So if you like Tower of God, be sure to give the first arc of Sword Art Online a try.
