Total War Warhammer 3’s next free legendary lord is an undefeated Chaos champion

As Total War Warhammer 3 patch 6.0 marches ever closer, developer Creative Assembly gathers once again to discuss the next major update for the Warhammer strategy game. In a new video, senior community manager Steve Coleman sits down with senior game director Rich Aldridge, battle designer Josh King, and audio director Chris Goldsmith to reveal a bit more of what we can expect from Total War Warhammer 3 patch 6.0. Key among the new unit reveals is confirmation of the legendary lord coming as free DLC, and it’s the mighty Destroyer of Khorne himself.

We’re still waiting on a date for the next Total War Warhammer 3 update and its corresponding DLC, which will introduce three new legendary lords to one of the best Warhammer games on PC. Goglfag Maneater heads up the Ogre Kingdoms, Skulltaker joins the ranks of Khorne’s legions, and Gorbad Ironclaw is the newcomer on the side of the Orcs and Goblins. Joining them will be a number of additional forces, some of which are revealed in this latest developer blog.

For the Ogre Kingdoms we take a look at the Paymaster. Ogres love their gold, after all, so this support unit is there to serve as a reminder that if the squad isn’t performing up to snuff, then they’re not getting paid. They also get the Pigback Riders, which are a pair of Gnoblars piggybacking on top of each other that act as a surprisingly well-coordinated anti-infantry unit.

There’s also Eshin Maneater, one of the new Ogre regiments of renown that acts as essentially a solo unit, taking to the battlefield in ninja-like garb. “Imagine this large Ogre who’s probably the worst character in the room in regards to stealth, but still manages to pull it off in combat somehow,” King laughs. We also take a look at Golgfag’s Deadeye ability, which lets him use his pistol to wear down or pick off long-range targets.

Next, Aldridge teases some of the new additions for the Greenskins, Warhammer’s collective group of Orcs and Goblins. Snagla Grobspit is your legendary hero, and he’ll be heading up his mob of spider-riding Forest Goblins, the Deff Creepers. Expect poison-related skills and buffs when he’s on the battlefield. They’ll also be getting the Night Goblin Big Boss, an expert wrangler of Squigs, and Black Orcs are joining the fray as a new shield-wielding melee unit.

Over on the Khorne side of things, Chaos fans will be able to bring Bloodspeakers onto the battlefield to buff friendly units around them simply by getting stuck into the action himself. There are also the impressive Khornegors, goatlike beastmen that benefit from a blend of abilities including Primal Fury and Frenzy.

As for Skulltaker, we’ve already taken a look at his Cloak of Skulls ability, which will let him grow stronger by defeating other characters to claim a part of their strength as his own. The more kills he gets in combat, the more his defensive skills will power up, making him an increasingly formidable force as the battles rage on. Goldsmith even notes that “real bones” went into the audio design as you hear Skulltaker stomping across the field.

Alongside this new DLC, Total War Warhammer 3 patch 6.0 will bring lots of free updates to the table. First is a redesign for the Greenskins scrap system, with interface changes to make getting the upgrades you need smoother. For the Ogres, well, “It’s an ogrehaul,” Aldridge grins (if I had to hear it, so do you). Alongside updates to The Great Maw and its offerings, all of the Ogre lords will now have big names.

Khorne, meanwhile, gets a new feature called the Skull Throne. This functions as a new skill tree that lets you spend the accumulated skulls of your enemies to progress up, unlocking powerful buffs that can apply passive boosts to your forces, spread corruption, replenish your armies, or even summon a Blood Host.

With that out of the way, we finally get to know who the free legendary lord for patch 6.0 will be, and it’s Arbaal the Undefeated. Known as the Destroyer of Khorne, this hardened warrior wants nothing more than to bring the mightiest opponents to bear against his crimson axe and ferocious hound. This plays out in-game as a new feature called The Wrath of Khorne, which will represent his chaotic crusade.

That’s all the news for today’s update, although it’s worth watching the full video if you want to see some of the audio creation in process. I love a glimpse behind the scenes of production, and there are some real treats in here, including a bizarre sound recording from a foley artist munching noisily on porridge to recreate the sickening squelches of the Colossal Squigs.

Coleman teases that you can expect the official trailer for Total War Warhammer 3 6.0 “later this month.” In the meantime, consider trying out the best Total War Warhammer 3 mods, or delve into more of the best grand strategy games on PC.
